What Would You Do?
 

I've had a little over a week off due to vacation and self-quarantining in the house. It's time to go back to work this weekend and my wife is begging me to call in sick for the entire month of April due to the possibility of bringing the corona home. I feel fine and will continue to take preventative measures to stay healthy. No one's health condition in the house meets the requirements to get an excusal from flying (e.g., no underlying health conditions, no children under 12 months old, etc.). I want to get out of the house and go flying (for my own sanity), but I also don't want to start WWIII with the wife from the likely "quarantined" location of my garage upon my return. What would you do? How is everyone else handling this situation at their homes?

Where is the list that gets one excused? I’ve never heard of this.

I would absolutely go to work and welcome the outing. I would also explain there are people from gad station attendants to doctors to grocery store baggers with far more risk and exposure. I’d also point to the factual evidence that the vast majority infected show few symptoms and recover completely at home without difficulty.

I've got a friend in the exact situation. He's debating a leave but either doesn't qualify or not sure if the financial implications make sense. The plan is to keep working. Explain to the wife and kids that the situation sucks, but the numbers look like this:

70% chance that he'll get it. 80% chance it won't be a big deal if he does. 15% chance it will be serious and require hospitalization. 5% chance he will die, again, if he gets it.

He's got a room in the house with a bathroom and will quarantine after and between trips for basically weeks until they get more info. She's got to bring him food and beers.

If the wife and kids get it, the idea is that most people are probably going to get it and the numbers are the same for them.

Rather not go to work for a lot of reasons, but authorities seem to think it's important, and it's what he does (profession).

I see why you’re in this situation, weakness. Asking the internet for a back bone; you must have slipped by the interview process as a triple minority such as myself.

As long as no one in your house is in a high risk group, exercise proper hygiene and social distancing (when possible) on the road. Then do the same at home, minus the social distancing because it’s pointless when you live in the same house. If you are paranoid at most treat your uniform and bags like they are infested with bed bugs and leave them in the garage. Some of the stuff going around on the wives page that they are doing is insane. This isn’t Ebola, most of the risk can be mitigated with behavior and hygiene.

That being said, if I was 63 there would be a lot of sick calls in my future.

If I thought I had a 5% chance of dying from this, I wouldn’t be leaving the house. You have to have several elevated risk factors to approach that probability of death. If you do, I STRONGLY suggest you stay home and stay isolated.
