First off, at the risk of a logical fallacy, a guy from the opposing military trying to explain why the other side fought can't exactly be trusted.

But to the matter itself, the war was to prevent southern independence. Yes slavery was a big reason the south seceded but secession was perfectly legal, the north were the aggressors and they fought to preserve the union not abolish slavery. Lincoln himself said so.
