To clear up some of above.

you can get PS to (SLC or NYC for example) during your fly months. You can book the jumpseat early TO work, but not from work.

Only on the fleets without an ATL base ie 220. An SLI cannot get PS to the base of his/her choice if that aircraft is based in ATL. Nor can they book the JS early during fly months. Only sim months.

I think they get an extra 2 days...like LCA’s. 7 days early vs. 5 for regular pilots. (I think)

9 days early to get to Atl for sim duty. Same as everyone else to get home.

I just wanted to confirm that SLI positions are only open to FOs.

Does anybody know if you have to already be on a plane to be eligible to apply or will they train you on a new aircraft?

My buddy was hired in the 330 dept (717 guy with prior Airbus IP experience) prior to going on UNA status. As of now the FC told him you have to be current/qual’d on the acft to be considered.

Thanks for all the replies, that definitely helps in making my decision. I loved instructing in the AF but the thought of having to deal with the current flight restrictions to commute from ATL to SLC or NYC was a pretty big stick in the eye. If I apply for all 3 are they 3 separate hiring boards or just 1 combined interview and they discuss among themselves where I land if hired?

I think the most important part of this job is whether or not you enjoy teaching. If you don’t like to instruct then you’re probably not going to enjoy being an SLI and being in the sim even if you live in Atlanta. If you like teaching then you’ll most likely really enjoy it and find it rewarding.

My recommendation is to be an SLI on the most junior fleet. Your pay is based on what you can hold so if someone junior to you is a captain on anything then you’ll get 350 pay even if you teach on the 220. The kicker is when you go fly. On your fly months you bid your seniority just like every line pilot. So if you’re a junior SLI on a senior fleet then your fly months will be on reserve.

^^^^ this

the issue with the 350 SLI is you can fly the line and get 85 hours of 350 pay with 19 days off a month, or be in the sim and make 85 hours of 350 pay and work 17 days a month.

Or put it this way- same pay, but work 1/3rd of the month with GS opportunities or work 2/3rds with none, which sounds better?

NB is the way to go. especially 717/220.

That checks with what I’ve heard too. I know a guy who was hired as a 330 SLI in January with an April 2020 start date (He was a NB FO on 717 or 320). COVID cancelled his training class. Now that the 330 fleet is looking for SLI’s, that same pilot is being told he’s not eligible because he is not current and qualified on the 330.

That sounds fishy, I know a few people who have been hired to be an SLI into a fleet where they had no experience or AE into. Plus if they intend to furlough then a large % of their 220 SLI pool will be on the street, they wouldn't be able to get very many applicants if that's the case.

Unless of course I am misunderstanding your intent and you're referring to holding an SLI position while on furlough.

The email I saw to him from the 330/350 FC states “current and qualified.” He was hired under the previous FC. When the Training Dept furloughed 25% of SLIs across the board they pulled his and a few others training slots. I believe the new FC came in just prior to the whole Covid/furlough thing and is now wanting current and qualified applicants. Granted things can change if they don’t get enough “current and qualified” applicants so it’s always worth applying. But just know if you’re not on the 330/350, you’ll probably go to the bottom of the stack initially. Every fleet has their own FC by the way. So the 220 FC obviously can hire from a different pool. Whereas the 330/350 FC can be pickier.

If you got called to interview it would be 3 separate interviews. Each fleet does their own. Typically the interview is the fleet manager and a couple APDs. I think most fleets use the same format, 10 min of teaching something not related to aviation—on my fleet there was no PowerPoint allowed, only a white board, but some fleets allow PowerPoint. Then some questions from everyone.
