As a lifelong commuter, I find this an interesting part of this whole thing. She is catching flak for saying that commuting time does in fact add to a fatigue level. Can any of you honestly say she is wrong? If she is, then why does the company pushing you make a difference? You only need three or four hours of quality sleep before going into a 15 hour day, right?
I am not advocating that commuting time be rolled into duty time, because for one it would be an unmitigated disaster wrt scheduling the airline or it would force commuting on OALs or commuting the night before in many cases. The company couldn't handle the resulting chaos that would be inevitable. But separate what she is saying regarding fatigue, and I think if you are honest about it you will actually agree with her.

less fatiguing than a 3 hour commute by car.

Re-read what I wrote. My arguments were about waking up with the family. I contend it’s no different for a commuter or local. But here we go.
1. I dont get up that early to commute. I bid appropriately. If I do, it’s for an earlier sign in for some kind of good deal. I go to bed appropriately just like on the road.
2. See above. It’s the same.
3. An hour drive in traffic is fine. You win that one but I enjoy watching movies (or supervising from the jumpseat more). My drive is 20 min in no traffic after 1:30 flight. Flights every hour.
4. My airport is east security. That was my point. I’m not doing it at a busy hub. Not a huge help but less stressful.
In the end, I’m glad we are all happy with our decisions. There is not enough tea in China to live in a delta hub. You can have it. I will gladly commute and you won’t hear me complain, unless it’s to another commuter.

You and others make this type of arguement but it’s apples vs walnuts.
I live in base. In 25 years I have been doing this I have been a drive to work guy and a commuter. There is a HUGE difference in driving to work and commuting. To act as if they are the same is stretching credibility.
to answer your questions
1. Yes. Not waking at 3 am to head to the airport for a commute to be in base by that afternoon
2. Maybe but that is not a commuter issue. That’s a family issue to determine
3. Pretty good. Takes about 40 minutes or 50 minutes in rush hour. Parking lot takes about 20 minutes if I just miss the bus
4. Security lines. Well you go thru them to commute or in base so not much of a difference there
When you commute, same day, you have every issue that the guy driving to work does plus adding approximately 1 prior to your flight, plus the length of the commute flight, plus anytime more than an hour to an hour and half you get to your base before your flight.
I am not advocating for commuting to count. I like the flexibility. Just saying your arguments are not great.

I leave my house on average 5 hours before sign-in. That means a noon sign-in requires me to leave house at 7am and get up at 6:15am. That noon sign-in could have me flying until 1am. I’m senior so I try to avoid trips like this. Usually takes me 4 hours on back end to get home so I waste 9 hours commuting every single trip. The driver probably wastes 2 1/2 hours total compared to my 9. So 6.5 hours times 4 trips is 26 hours per month commuting or the equivalent of 2 1/2 days that I could be home. I do a little better than this because I manage to bid trips that start or end with a deadhead to my home airport. Some months there aren’t any trips that have that though.

KP cares about nobody but KP. Her ALPA campaign tripped over the starting line and never recovered. Her campaign emails were just about her, her, her, her, her, and her. The rest of the group didn’t matter it was just a continuation of her revenge tour against EB and JG. Her EB ambush at Velvet was immature at best and a waste of company resources to pay her to do that. She never passed captain training here and it’s embarrassing that she’s claiming she did. Holding an AE isn’t the same.
She’s headed for another round of lawsuits and DAL won’t have screwed up beforehand this time. She needs professional help. Good riddance and enjoy retirement.
