short term, call in sick. Unfit to fly is unfit to fly. Long term, CPO

If he really wants to keep the company out of it, he could give Alpa a call and talk to the pilot assistance people or his rep for guidance.

The IMSAFE checklist is a personal health assessment used to ensure the pilot is healthy before each flight. The letters stand for; Illness, Medication, Stress, Alcohol, Fatigue, Emotions. By reviewing these elements of the checklist, the pilot can conclude whether he/she is personally fit to fly

If you’re friend does not call in sick, but instead calls the CPO for advice, he will likely be given PDs/APD for the time missed. He will not be paid.

If he is too distracted to fly, he should call in sick and let the CPO call him to figure out what’s going on. Don’t call the CPO. Also call the ALPA Pilot Support Network (or similar name). There are pilot volunteers who are highly competent to give your friend advice.

First step, call in sick, take a deep breath, and take a couple days at home to assess where you’re going. He shouldn’t fly in this state.

I wish someone would have laid this out for me. It all worked out for the best in my family, though I’m 1/2 month’s pay poorer for the lesson.

Edit - my post refers to short-term stabilization of the situation. Use your sick leave. Long-term, I would expect you’d need to engage the CPO.

thanks this is what I was looking for. I think he’s pretty much out of sick leave he’s been dropping trips and calling out sick since August. I’ll pass this on.

Granted it was pre covid DAL, but my wife was diagnosed with a brain tumor day 2 of indoc. This on combination with her brother dying in a farming accident the week before was to put it mildly a bad two weeks in my house.

They (indoc / training teams, BB and BT) worked it out where I finished indoc and went home to "study" on training pay unti my wife was able to drive and do day to day things post surgery. Not sure what options are available to a line pilot, but doesn't hurt to ask. But ask wisely.

I do agree with calling ALPA. There are often ways to make things work, but the new Delta might not do it.

I wouldn't call CPO until hes talked to ALPA.

I got questioned on why I've been out sick for a month even though it took UHC three weeks to approve a needed surgery (broke bone severely enough to need a plate and screws)

Thank god we were on Tricare Reserve when my wife was diagnosed, because she'd probably have died before they would have approved the MRI that found the tumor, nevermind the surgery.

Does anyone know where to find the ARCOS callout videos? I have responded via the APP before but always seem to have trouble ranking them in priority order.

Thanks Scoop
