I believe it does not matter if you bid reserve or a line - not in the top 50 Pilots keep your fingers crossed.

What is confusing is they can go right up to the 50% pilot as a reserve and have very little coverage as line holder since the trips are spread out more evenly. This is very evident for non holiday month weekends - which most reserves want off resulting in plenty of coverage awards. Christmas will probably have more even coverage since many line holders and reserve alike bid for this off.

Something to keep in mind is that it's the top 50% of line holders (in holiday months) who are protected, not just top 50% in category. Also, as said above, reserves get no such protections which means in most categories, only 1 or 2 reserves are protected from coverage. Weirdly enough, it doesn't necessarily mean it will be the most senior protected either. It's an odd situation but it occasionally happens that the senior reserve pilot gets coverage and someone junior does not. PWA 12.M.5 is the reference for the reserve coverage and it's one of the more terrible parts of our contract.

Thanks.

So the next question is, why would PBS not slide a vacation over Christmas on a RES bid?
One thing a line bit can do that a reserve bid cannot is “vacation any”. If you don’t need your vacation days off all in a string (or don’t want them that way) it can be an attractive option. Doesn’t offer any extra power to avoid coverage.

To avoid coverage: No.

To "shape coverage advantageously": Maybe. Consider a situation where one wants a very specific set of days off, during a period likely to be hit with coverage. Now throw a VAC block on there, one which cannot effectively be moved due to that coverage, particularly at a seniority or in a category with only (or predominantly) longer trips. VACATION ANY may allow a specific trip that satisfies coverage (but would be otherwise unavailable due to one or more vacation days). Edge case, sure, but a valuable tool (as you say)--even if you're subject to coverage, I would argue.

Buyer beware, vacation any can chop up your vacation into small blocks or single days.

SK explained in a podcast that generally the top 15% of reserves are protected from coverage. I can't remember the rationale they used.

However you want to look at it, each day will be available as an X-day for 1, 2 pilots or 15% of the reserves.

I think his point is that there's no way to 100% guarantee that you are one of those 1, 2, or 15% of reserves. Even if you are #1 seniority in the seat.

If you are one or two or top 15% of reserves, you can absolutely guarantee those days off.

Makes sense.

Not entirely true. There are instances where the the number 1 reserve will get coverage and someone junior did not. It's rare, but I've seen it happen.
