A 5000 block hour shortage over a year would result in 32 pilot jobs (5000 / 12 / 53, round up, multiply by 4).
Part of the problem is using 16 months as a divisor vs the measurement period of 24 months.
Then using 3 crew members instead of 4.

It's 53 block hours per month per widebody pilot (not crew).

Planetrain's post lays it out nicely.

Any new lately on aircraft orders? With new Global Scope and brass being quoted as wanting DL to be 50/50 domestic to international it seems as though a huge wide body order would have to be coming down the line. Have only heard of discontinuation of seasonal routes.

Can’t staff the flying that we currently have. I think they’re busy trying to put out the fire in front of them and they’re not looking too far forward.

Last time GH was asked about the 35K, the look on his face told me something didn't go their way with the planned order.

Well, it didn't. Delta wanted the Qatar 35Ks and Airbus worked out a settlement with Qatar to take deliveries of those aircraft.

And....in the process, showed our hand/interest in acquiring them so I am sure any sweetheart pricing deal evaporated with the Qatar settlement and the subsequent acquisition cost of the -1000s became a bit too rich for the board's blood.

Not sure where the 50/50 quote came from but everything I've seen has been revenue based. They want to drive the revenue premium up to ~15%, the same as domestic, and drive the total revenue more into balance 40/60 was stated a while ago.

I’m sure our new daily dumpster fire cancellation operation is totally gonna do that…

I bet you're right. Now Delta has to force Boeing and Airbus to fight it out in the rumored RFP.
