Doesn't the company keep touting our excellent domestic network that feeds our hubs to then fly the passengers to international hubs? Why can't we use our profitable domestic network to feed new international flights? Someone asked at a pilot meeting why doesn't Delta serve India (the largest population in the WORLD) as our competitors do. The answer was, "Ed has said he wants us to serve India. We don't have the airplane to do that, we're looking at planes, the A350-1000 would be nice but we don't have them." WTF... did someone not notice that India was a big country?
I really have to wonder why we don't serve India. It's the largest population on the planet, and the United States has the highest Indian poponulation of any country other than India. Seems like something is missing there.
I would argue that top level management is using those incomes to avoid having to compete in the airline business. Leaning on those profits as it were, to avoid working hard to improve profits in the "flying airplanes" side of the business.

I have no idea how we would even get to India at this point. I'd love to see how united does it, because there isn't enough open airspace that would allow it for us.

Yes. Zoom into FliteDeckPro, and that region of the world. It’s amazing how big the no-fly area is. Even without that massive detour, India was always a very low yield market. There is absolutely no financial point in Delta Airlines serving India.

Look at FDPro and at all the airspace on any kind of great circle route you would fly from basically anywhere in the US to India. You have to zoom, but everything from the north pole to central Africa is no operations or straight up no fly. And it's not just Russian airspace. I would be interested to see how UAL does it.

It looks like they may not have the same no fly areas that we do. Their route takes them across Ireland, UK, Belgium, Germany, Czechia, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, south Black Sea, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan, Afghanistan, Pakistan and in to Delhi.
