I encourage my FO's to carry a North Face style jacket for walk arounds. Also, they can carry a winter hat with them. Not being okay with that is a d-bag move and you should be ashamed of yourself. But I'm sure you begin every briefing with "I'm laid back but I'm by the book."
My favorite reply to the “I’m laid back….” CA proclamation was “I’ll be the judge of that!” Their response told me all I needed to know.

Anybody tried a pair of these for work shoes? The steel shank boots are becoming a hassle with a 90% "random" rate.

I don't think the shade of your black pants really matters because new hires are getting vouchers to purchase their pants on zappos with approved options. For men its either Calvin Klein pants or Dockers. And between those two pants the colors are completely different. The Calvin's have a grayish pattern and the dockers are a shinny black. So it seems the company itself is creating a uniform color mismatch.
