Cool, but not very CRM friendly. Probably depends on the reason. Overflowing toilets probably take priority over cockpit etiquette.

Wait until you look out the left window and see your boarding airplane foot traffic the wrong way because your flight attendant called a red coat and decided to deplane the aircraft without mentioning it to the pilots.
Cool or uncool?

As to the latter scenario, if you're on the airplane, you need to be kept in the loop at the least. They don't get to make those kinds of decisions without you being in the loop.

While we're on the topic of preflights and duties and maintenance, I've had a few instances of returning to the plane and finding maintenance techs in the cockpit. When I ask what's up I learn that the first officer has called maintenance and told them of a perceived discrepancy without my knowledge or consent.

I guess the FO could twiddle thumbs and wait for you to tell them to do the above steps.
-or-
“Hey I found an issue with XYZ. I called Maintenance.”
”Thanks”

How long were you gone? It takes at least 10 minutes to find an issue, look up the freq/type in problem on efb, get a response and answer any questions, and then get a mechanic out to the plane.

I wouldn't have an issue with coming back to the jet to find out the FO wrote up the plane, but I'm genuinely curious to hear anecdotes from those who have been here longer than me. Has anyone found an instance where you believe this was not the right call and you think the FO should've let you know first?

Why isn't it CRM friendly? I'll tell you when you get to the jet. Until then, the FO, qualified in the aircraft, is the one making decisions. If I'm on a broken trip, I don't even know if or when you'll make it. If it's an obvious discrepancy, there's no need to run it by you before calling mx. I'll call mx, put it in the book and let you know then you get here.

Inexperienced: “What’s it doing?!”
Experienced: “Oh, it’s doing that again.”
There was a time in aviation where the left seat knew some tricks (like calling ATL via a recorded line for a phone patch to maintenance to get some authorized pointers) and could speed things along. Do this job long enough (you have) and surely you’d agree that “qualified” doesn’t mean “experienced.”
(Some dumb write ups? “Potable water inop”. Maintenance called. Maintenance filled the 100% empty potable water tanks and miraculously fixed the problem. “Did you even check the water level? Why not? It’s literally your responsibility” Logbook item cleared, mechanics run to the next plane after wasting 20 minutes on this.)
Not going to die on this hill though. Call away. If the tire is flat or the fluids/O2 are low, what are you waiting for?
Most captains like to be kept in the loop and a 3 minute delay isn’t too much to ask for a professional courtesy though. A two way street, I might add.

We have people here that lose their feces when the FO use to hand the release to the gate agent when they were using the lav. I have no reason to believe there are people here who can turn this into a big deal. I mean just on this thread we have “CA you will respect authority” who will assign walk arounds when they don’t want to do them. Luckily these people are few and far between.
Remember kids, someone did it to me so now it's my turn to do it to you!
