Default Passport Renewal

Hey sorry in advance if my ineffective forum searching abilities were unable to find a good answer to my question. But what do most pilots of Int'l (NYC330 here) categories do to quickly renew their passports? The CIBT service states 15 business days to renew, That's essentially 3 weeks time frame...And I don't reside in a major city that has a passport office. I've last renewed my passport in DC nearly 10 years ago but don't want to drive the 4 hours and spend the day there. Most people that I have flown with live near a passport office so their answers weren't exactly helpful. Thanks for your input.

Send it in when you have a break. If it's not back in time, tell scheduling you have followed Delta policy and are without a passport. It's a them problem, not a you problem. I've had trips/res dropped with pay by following company passport guidelines.

Trips that falls within the 15 business day, won’t get payed. I just did mine a couple of months ago.

I've seen exceptions made in WB categories where you can't build a compliant schedule that allows for 15 business days. This can also be a once in a decade chance to clear a 3 week summer/holiday vacation block.

I know this isn't helpful, but back when I was on the 7ER in NYC, we were authorized to get a second passport which is what we used to keep our Russian and French visas current in (that's how long ago this was), which was good for 2 years, but if timed right, while the main passport was off getting renewed, we had the other passport to use. Too bad the visa situation has gotten easier because that was at least one handy consequence of the visa paperwork headache.

If you are based in NYC simply make a appointments there for the instant renewal and commute in that morning for your trip. Easy to get into the city with the train subway combination.

Last time I did mine was 2020 during Covid. CIBT was taking 6 months and eventually we were told not to use them. Are they still a thing? Terrible service, I hope we aren't using them.

CIBT is actually been a great service recently. I don't think the issue during Covid was with them necessarily and if it was, things have greatly changed for the better.

CIBT has to have access to the passport people the same way an individual does. No magic to it. During COVID, the government was locked down so no one could see anyone, so CIBT couldn't do their job either. I had to renew mine during that time and trying to get a passport with the offices was a complete waste of time if you were on reserve, which many fleets were. The passport offices were locked down and the one I visited (or at least tried to) at the suggestion of the CPO had armed guards to keep people away.

I wound up renewing through a post office and it only took 6 weeks, and they were pretty nice about it.
