"Hi All Y'all, I'm Captain Dick Hungwell, and this is First Officer Craven Morehead. I know we are late, but we just got in to D34, on time, but then we had to wait 10 mintues for a ground crew to show up to park us, and then for an agent to open the door. Seems they were not expecting an Airplane to show up in Atlanta, ON TIME! Now, I'd like to be on board right now, getting ready to go, but some dork on the 4th floor who has no line pilot experience, decided I need to start making Gate Agent P/A's every 15 minutes instead! In just a few minutes, after we find some Food, we will begin preflighting the airplane, but in 15 minutes, I'll need to stop what I'm doing, and come out here to make another 'why we are late' P/A, so it's probably going to be at least 30-45 minutes before we are ready. Just be glad we are not flying into Washington National on a Dark and Stormy night, and my name is not Chris Manno!" Why you should NEVER fly into Washington National Airport « JetHead's Blog

Default Pilot Gatehouse PAs & Uniform Inspections

"You are nothing more than a cost to be minimized."

I still remember exactly when the salty 727 Captain told me that as I was walking through the mighty 727 picking up trash and opening eyeball vents.

I was a total rube, fresh out the US Navy, and a brand new hire 727 Second Officer, so obviously I did not believe him - DAL was a great company and they hired me as a future CAPT and a leader.

I also still remember when I realized he was 100% correct and came to the conclusion that I was a naive idiot. It was when I received my furlough notice. The furlough was not what bothered me, it was post 911 and the industry was on its heels, but the fact that DCI was hiring thousands of pilots as we were laying off over 1000 Pilots was what bothered me.

Then his words came back to me "You are a cost to be minimized." And we were being minimized alright, to the tune of 50 to 80 mainline pilots per month.

That brings me to today's topic de jour - Gatehouse PA's and Uniform inspections. So what is the statute of limitations on being screwed over by management? Should we all be Happy campers now since Leo and Fred are gone? Are we all over our pensions being terminated? Should we be? Or is this management shuffle simply part of the game, Management screws over Labor and then is replaced by a new "Labor Friendly" management team and we are supposed to start over eager and fresh faced.

Well here are my thoughts on this issue;

Uniform Inspection - Who gives a crap, we should all wear our uniform within standards because we knew this was expected of us when we were hired. I wear my hat (and I am not even bald) and really don't care about this - it is a non-issue in my mind.

Gatehouse PAs to me are a totally different issue. I will wait and see what DALPA has to say about this and I am an FO so I don't really think I will be making any gatehouse PA's anytime soon.

But I am sorry that is when I am usually foraging for food since I only get a crew meal on over a 5+30 block even though that can easily lead to a 7 or 8 hour time period without food.

I admit the company has been pretty good about improving our contract outside section 6 via the SOT etc but what are we getting for this? How about crew meals and 1 positive space vacation pass yearly? We always hear "What are you willing to give up for that?" every time we push for something - well "What is Delta willing to give us formalizing additional Pilot duties?"

Just my 2 cents - Scoop

WRT to Uniform policy and the PA announcement.
PLease explain to me how this will be implemented at our connection carriers? I am sick and tired to being told how to do things, how to wear the uniform, how to act and I walk around terminal C and it looks like a F*&(&*$ high school hallway with slick backed hair, backpacks, no hats, rumpled jackets, and sunglasses on. I have absolutely NO problem with the company dictacting how I do my job. They pay the check I will wear what I am told and how. If they want me to make a PA i will it might not be every 15 min but I wil make an effort. BUT they need to hold the express guys accountable or SEVER the link. Remove the express carriers, remove the name anything. I am really tired of me and my fellow delta pilots going above and beyond to do and wear the right thing only to have it screwed up by an express pilot who doesnt give a shet All our good effort and good will can be eliminated in a fraction of a section by a bad express experience. IMHO Flight ops should be spending their efforts educating the express carriers on the same policy and if they dont comply, GOOD BYE!

I'll never understand the uniform standards heartache. If one complies with the standards, a LCA insuring we are doing so is no big deal. I like it. I'm tired of slobs wearing stained ties, no blazers, no hats, wrinkled shirts, & grubby shoes.
And lll fitting trousers that only come down to the top of the rubber soled shoe.

They are outsourced contractors and as such, have no control over.

What are you trying to say? The old timers need longer pants?

About the uniform, I think they should give us an allowance account at the uniform shop and everyone would definately spend it. The problem is we are all pilots and as such are cheap @$$es...except when it comes to watches and toys in the garage I'm told.

Start in your own backyard. I saw mainline FO getting of DH in CVG who had his top button undone and tie loosened (my biggest personal pet peeve), and he had about a size 50 jacket, which for most people would double as a car cover. But he did have his hat, it wasn't on, but he had it.

Some of us lowly "express" guys try and look good, but when you see guys at mainline look like that, it sets a bad example.
