That will depend. The first thing for you to know is that Surface 2 is an entirely different software platform from Surface 2 Pro. Android, Apple and Linux are a lot more similar to one another than Surface is to Surface Pro. Surface is Windows RT, a special ARM processor specific language.

That having been stated, it is up to the Company whether they negotiate rights to port products from Jeppesen and other vendors to other platforms. The issue here is the cost of writing the software and support.

We know the Company will continue to support the iPad (BYOD as they call it) through 2014. Regardless of device, the product that will be most frequently used is something very similar to this:

Mobile FliteDeck Pro | EFB Enroute Flight Chart Solution for our Airline & Military Partners | Jeppesen

Eventually not only will the Company lock everyone into their device, it will be all you want. It will just be easier and work better than any other solution, plus be free, plus be supported, plus we will be paid for the training. There is also the issue of redundancy. The FAA will want conformity (because, of course they will).

A couple of hurdles I don't think we will cross in the short term are:
- Using anything below 10,000 feet unless the Company works the approval with the FAA.
- Getting "moving map" capability. The FAA would see that as a navigational device which is a whole different ball game from a much simpler "chart reader" application. You can imagine a map shift while using an EFB to taxi at LAX ....

I dunno if the Company would let a pilot on an un approved fleet load the software on their personal Surface device. My guess is that they'll have to lock this down to avoid an administrative nightmare as folks using non standard configurations began having issues and seeking help from software engineers who are already very busy creating a really cutting edge capability that no other operator has.

That is something I'll appreciate on all flights, but especially when flying into South American or the Middle East.

Anyone know if the DL tablet will work in private aircraft??:D

It would function, but the Jeppesen Database will most likely be restricted to what is currently in your fleet's flight kit. No short runways, no VFR Charts :-(

Of course, if you wanted to buy your own database ....

Think I'll stick to my Android solution + I'll print out charts from the NOS database if I'm going into anything even somewhat marginal .....

I'm wondering how this will play out. I mean, it's wonderful that we have come this far from when I got hired, when we were hauling sixty pounds of books around. The load has only gotten lighter.

That bit in the FAQs about "personal data" is a howl. Who would be dense enough, in this day and age, to put any part of their personal lives on company property?

The reps are going to be busy defending the toolsets who can't resist loading up their tablets with objectionable junk.

Good luck getting the company to do anything regarding inflight. They are their own company. They have their own budget, give out cash rewards to their own employees, get free uniforms, get paid for 'special assignments' like going to a baseball game... get holiday pay, holding pay, and overtime PPY4 or PPY6 (that's 4 to 6 hours on top of regular pay, for one or two day trips) is offered in most bases to straight pick up trips. 10 hour turns mean it's the best and highest paying part time job there is. There are FA's I know personally who take 6 months of leave, still earn full vacation for the year, then call in sick for all the summer trips. No carpet dance, phone calls or doctors notes required. Don't even get me started on the Breast Cancer Mafia... sorry if you survived any other type of cancer... no tie (or plane ride) for you!

You think Ron Allen retired? He tried to clean house at Inflight, and was never seen nor heard from again! Rumor has it they cooked him up in a nice gumbo in the FA lounge in MSY.

Are you trying to tell me the "me too clause" is a one way street? Because some of that sounds kind of nice for the pilot contract and I don't recall any of it being mentioned from our superlative negotiators.

Is the DALPA forum down? I can read it but weird that there are no new posts as of today.

The 'me too' clause is the biggest lie that's ever been sold to the DL pilots. It's amazing that so many guys still buy that line... oh, did I mention that they still have their pensions?

Found vintage family film reel footage of ACL at age 3.

It is in "Read-Only" mode at the moment. I guess the transition to 2.0 is imminent.

Read all that stuff at the top of the pages that everybody scrolls thru and you'll have your answer.
