Any "Latest & Greatest" about Delta?

Has anybody heard how things are going with Delta interviews and new hires? With Delta starting to hire off the street, I figured there would be more information flowing through the forum.

Just got the call (e-mail) today - they said they are interviewing tuesday through friday every week next month - 2 day process. Not sure how many new hire classes they have had, but it seams pretty steady. Now I'm lookin' for the gouge! (besides the 15 pages on WFFF!)

2 classes have gone through (first one was 10, second i believe was around 20-25)... 1 class of 25-ish is currently in progress.

The old WFFF gouges are perfect.. I interviewed the first day and it was excellent prep. Know your aviation mental math, haha.

Good luck! I'm loving it... I really think there is a bright future ahead for us in widgetland!

BubbleEyes2 04-24-2007 04:59 AM

The next class will be May 14th. There's been one a month pretty consistently. This month was the 16th. March had a 19th class. Still just talk, but there's a buzz that it will pick up after the emergence, or later this year. Good luck!

Gents,

What was the timeframe between the app process and getting a call for an interview? What credentials do you guys have? I've had my app in for about a month and still haven't heard anything. I'm new to this process, so don't beat me up too badly!

Guard Dude 04-27-2007 08:37 AM

Back from Atlanta

To Everyone:
I originally started this post to get any last minute tips before my Delta interview. I am excited to see some activity on this Delta thread.

With that being said, I am excited to say I just got back from Atlanta and got the conditional offer from Delta. Then, I did the physical, psych test, and talked to the psychologist the second day. Now it is just "hurry up and wait", provided nothing comes up in the blood work and psych stuff which I thought went very well. I was told to expect a middle of June class.

To answer some questions:
I put my app online in the middle/end of January. I have 2600+ MEL Total Turbine and 1200+ MEL Turbine PIC (all military). I got the email to interview middle of March. I selected a date just over a month away just to prepare. I could have interviewed earlier but I wanted to prepare because my experience is only military and this was my first (hopefully only) airline interview. I would say the biggest thing Delta is looking at is the completeness of the paperwork. In the interview, the HR dude went over my app, line by line. There were no mistakes and then I signed it. Then they said my other paperwork looks good and the two interview Captains went into the "TMAAT" questions. One thing I did in preparation was highlight the whole application and copy it to a word document and then spell check it in Word. You would be surprised what you spelled incorrectly. Then I had several of my Guard buddies, already at airlines, read it. Remember, if you get an interview you are qualified, however, if your paperwork is not "tight" you may find the interview tough. I am guessing that is why I did not see two of the five of us the second day. After the interview, I did the aviation knowledge, mini personality test, and cognitive test. That took about 3 hours. (Some of the interviewees tested first then interviewed) After all that, I was told to go wait in the lobby by the elevators. After sitting there for an hour+, I was called back to an interview room and formally offered a conditional job! I look back now and feel I was overprepared but that made for an awesome and positive experience.

The gouge is good but I also did buy and read some of the recommended books; "Mental Math for Pilots", "Aerodynamics for Naval Aviators", "Checklist for Success", "2007 FAR/AIM". I see WFFF has been mentioned, which is good. I would also checkout aviationinterviews.com. Also, checklistcomplete.com has excellent info for airline interview tips and preparation.

Lastly, I got a great vibe from the Delta folks. They are all excited to be hiring Pilots, again. They were all very positive and understand the stress you are going through during the interview process. Moreover, they are all extremely excited about Delta's future; coming out of bankruptcy, new international routes, new jets, etc. It is refreshing to see folks excited about the future of the industry.

Sorry about writing a novel. Hope this helps someone. Good Luck to all!!!

Rhino Driver,
Ask one of your Delta Pilot Employee Recommendations to get your name to the Delta Pilot Selection Office via phone call, email, or even in person, ANYTHING! (This goes for everyone trying to get on with Delta) I think this is the key to getting your app looked at now, among the growing sea of new applicants. I know it may not seem fair, but it is the nature of the beast. I think this is why I got the "interview" email. They are going through the applicant list but I think a phone call trumps the list. I bet you are just as qualified as I am, if not more. Your app just needs some "internal" visibility. I hope I am not being a downer. Good Luck, Dude!!!

Herkdrv 04-28-2007 02:47 AM

Guard dude how many internal recs did you have?

arjmjj 04-28-2007 05:59 AM

Get to a Air Inc fair.

I have no recs nor do I know a soul at Delta. I went to an Air Inc fair and dropped off my resume and got a interview email about a month later, mine is in May.

Herkdrv 04-28-2007 06:15 AM

I'll have to do that when I return to the states. If you don't mind me asking what are your stats? Good luck with your upcoming interview.

arjmjj 04-28-2007 08:54 AM

Hornet drvr. About 2600 TT, 1800 Turbine PIC-(w/ conversion).

At the job fair they actually divided the line waiting to drop off resumes into military/civilian. They seem to lean towards military.

I was very fortunate to have 6 Delta Pilot Recs, both Captains and FOs. IMHO, it was not until one of them called the Pilot Selection Office I got the email. I think it could only take one Rec to help you. I sent out 6 emails for Delta Pilot Employee Recs hoping to get just one. Imagine my surprise when all 6 added their rec. I was just lucky. I am very thankful to say the least.

Arjmjj has excellent advice about attending an Air Inc Job Fair. I went to one last year. What a great place to get "face time" with any airline's Pilot Hiring Department. I forgot to add the Air Inc Job Fair "Avenue" for getting your name to the Pilot Selection Office to my last post, especially if you do not have any Delta Recs.

Good Luck Arjmjj!
Good Luck to everyone!

Wow. I would think doing that would open the door to all sorts of complaining (or worse) about injustice towards one group and favoritism toward another. Surprised they would do something like that.

arjmjj 04-28-2007 07:34 PM

It was actually the first 4 guys in the new line that were military, not sure about the rest. We convinced ourselves we were special.

Special needs maybe! As in short bus kids.

The HR rep did split the mil guys off into a second line but it was late in the day and there was still a long line. I was surprised at how long the line was for Delta. They were impressed because I had spelled Delta Air Lines correctly (versus Airlines) on my resume :)

Good luck with the interview Piper. Let us know how it goes.

arjmjj 04-28-2007 09:09 PM

Piper? That's right y'all were using code names.

airline1 04-29-2007 05:30 AM

Thanks for the novel. I appreciate all the information I can gather.

Lizard2Barney 04-29-2007 06:31 PM

Availability question

How early will Delta start looking at applications? I put mine in, but put my availability as April 2008 due to my military commitment. Anyone in a similar boat? Are pilots getting called 3 months out? 6 months?

757Driver 04-30-2007 06:26 AM

Hopefully they can perform better than UAL post-bankruptcy.

Rhino Driver 04-30-2007 06:35 AM

Guard Dude,

Thanks for all the info. It's been a little over a month, so we'll see what happens. I only have one internal rec so I'm hoping more is not necessarily better in this case. Good luck!

Rhino Driver 04-30-2007 06:42 AM

arjmjj,

East or West Coast? I'm assuming you can find out about the Air Fair at the Air Inc website? Haven't looked yet.

arjmjj 04-30-2007 05:10 PM

West Coast at Miramar. 101. Couple of your kind flying there as well.

I found out about the Air Inc thru the website and decided to go last minute to the one in LA. Hopefuly it works out.

So what was the condition? The psych test and physical? In others words did you definitely get the job yet? I go in on the 15th/16th - hopefully for the June class as well!

acl65pilot 05-02-2007 11:08 AM

I will second what has been said on this threat. I just walked five people's resumes in and all five got called that day. They are looking for people to vouch for you. A few of the guys that I recommended did not have any other internal contact. You only need one, and in fact if you do go to an Air Inc even you may get called out of the blue. The interviewers themselves are the ones that are going to be at the event. It is fact time with the ones that make the call.
Delta will be hiring a lot more than the 200 that they have projected. You may easily triple that or more in the next year. Get your stuff in and get going. It is a great time to come on over. The good is going around.

Rhino Driver 05-02-2007 12:39 PM

I had someone walk my resume in a few weeks ago and haven't heard anything. I put July as my availability date. Does anyone have any info with regards to how far out they are willing to look at you?

I second that, ACL65. Rumor around the school house is 500. I believe they are doing 25/ class now. I still don't see how we are going to meet the summer schedule and how we are going to crew the 75's when they arrive.

What aircraft and base did you get?

Tom

BCDurbin,
After the interview and computer testing on the first day, if everything goes well, you are formally offered a conditional job with Delta in writing; pending the physical, psych eval, and background check. If you get the conditional job, that is when you come back for the second day. The second day is filled with the physical, MMPI test, and the Psych interview downtown. After talking to the psychologist, the shuttle took me to the airport to fly home. So, yes I was offered the job, however, it is not official until they get the results from all the second day stuff and background check. Hope this helps. Good luck to you!

It seems like it is a quick turn around. Once you get in the door at least.

How long does IOE normally last?

New hires fly a trip on the jumpseat to observe the operations, then fly a 3 or 4 day trip with a LCA.

80ktsClamp 05-03-2007 08:21 PM

You fly a 3 day trip in the jumpseat, and then have 40 hours of IOE flying.

I personally had a 3 day trip and then a 4 day trip out of ATL 8 days off in between those. :) Then 6 days off and a 2 day shuttle trip out of LGA.

It was all in all a great experience. Reserve here is a totally different ballgame than the regionals... talk about night and day. The rules are so much better.
