I received an interview invite from Delta last Thursday. This Tuesday we found out that my wife is expecting twins, and due to some complications they will be born prematurely no later than the end of August, possibly earlier. Worst case would be if my wife ends up hospitalized for monitoring starting in July, which would probably be before I finished training, and we've got a 4 year old who can't quite take care of himself yet.

Assuming I pass the interview in mid-April (just for discussion sake - not at all taking that for granted!) and start class mid-May, how does Delta handle family medical leave for a case like this for a new hire either before or after the end of training? How long would I be able to take leave to stay at home if I have family in the hospital?

Would this be a situation where it would make sense to do the unheard of and delay a class date for 6 months or so until things had stabilized at home, especially if in May I know I won't be able to get through training / IOE before needing to take leave?

I am also considering not joining the Navy reserves (initially) in order to avoid the extra time away from home, but that also has its pros and cons. Any thoughts from the military side on the comparison of Delta health insurance versus Tricare Reserve Select?

We definitely have a lot of info to figure out and of course it's right in the middle of prepping for the big interview, so I would really appreciate any advice from those who have experienced something similar or are familiar with the rules on this. Unfortunately the timing of all of this has forced the cart way ahead of the horse for us as we are getting out of the Navy and moving from Hawaii in May, probably to Greenville, SC to be near family.

I am very lucky to have a Delta interview and two babies on the way. I wish things were simpler and without the medical complications, but I know with a lot of help we'll get things figured out in the long run. Open replies or PMs welcome, and thank you very much for your time!
I had a similar situation to yours. Bottom line, DELTA WAS AWESOME. check your PMs.

Can't beat TRS. period.

I had heard from a friend there that a FA supervisor made that remark. Was that the source or did you hear it from an actual Flight Operations type?

Crew Resources rep at the LAX base visit on Tuesday.

There's some seriously great things (announced) happening in LA finally!

AE tomorrow?
I wonder if they'll drop the dtw 717 expansion if they open lax or if they'll do both?

It's really stalled out in DTW, hasn't it... opening a new base can't improve things there. I have to think that CVG is dwindling... maybe an 88/90 base in DTW?

Solid source then on the LAX 777 base... I'll bet a few of the very top guys put in papers if they can't do the DH to SYD trips anymore...

Displacements on the DTW777 then??

When I fly the 717 to DTW I feel outnumbered by 88/90s by 2:1. Maybe it's a ymmv but I do think they should have a base there.

LAX 717 is working on the AE preferences which is usually the best way to know their plans. But they were clear LAX flying via DTW... actually, let's see if DTW M88 works... no.

BTW, 350 doesn't work from any base. Or LAX 777.

Step 1. Get Hired.
Step 2. Join the Navy Reserves. TRS blows away DAL medical.
Step 3. Take care of any required leave issues as they arise. Be honest and proactive, but get hired first.

Do not delay your class-date unless it is absolutely unavoidable.

Good Luck!

Very solid information on the 777, but marketing seems to change the plan quite a bit. It definitely is part of the current plan but will it still be in the plan in 6 months? I certainly hope so.

Excellent Advice! I would do exactly this.

What's the final 717 pilots number? ~900-950?

Assuming a still-hypothetical LAX base would have, let's say, 100 pilots, where does that put the headcount projection for the summer/fall? I think there would still be a bit of room to grow either DTW some more, NYC, or LAX.
