The LAX 73N category is pretty laid back. After 9-11, I got pretty much the full system tour of DAL: I bounced from DFW-LAX-SLC-MCO-ATL-SLC and finally back to LAX. All of the guys that I flew with were pretty laid back, but the LAX 73N Captains set the standard for being relaxed. Another bonus is that in a category this size you often the know the guys you fly with. I also set the stab trim - aren't we supposed to? Then again I never had a captain complain or question me about it and I am also ignorant on the whole "Fletch issue." Of course I am one of the few, the proud, who use the 'Very Seldom" button, AKA VS, AKA vertical speed.

The button on the 737 actually says "LVL CHG" or something like that, but on the 757/767 it says "FL CH," thus where the "Feltch" thing comes in.
I was a big VS fan on the 75/76 since the descend now function just parked the autothrottles and the airplane would waft around chasing the descent airspeed. I'd just dial in 1000 FPM until approaching the path and then put it back into VNAV for a smooth transition to idle.
The 73 automatically does the 1000 FPM thing when descend now/ALT INTV is done, so I typically will use that and never have to leave VNAV path. Terminal area I use VS until I need to get down then its LVL CH (which I'm now going to start calling "Ferd" and see if anyone notices.)
Techniques by 80, done. I need a drink.
The whole FLCH discussion is much more fun over too many beers. First time I saw it come up was in the NRT Sports Bar where we had a transplanted ALT to MSP capt with an old head MSP FO, me and my LAX Capt. The other FO, trying to get over/around some weather at one of the islands had asked for "FLCH, continuous thrust, bug me to XXX Knots" to which the answer was, "what?" I would have asked for "mountain climb mode"
My instance was that it must be "FLCH." If it's "flight level change" then the button above it would have to be "vertical navigation"
Like I said, a much better story over beer
I think most of the differences are driven by something else. For example, the radio head differences are due to the crazy town that is ATL. AWABS procedures and where it is in the checklist drives the Capt to setting the TO trim. Etc, etc.
Ain't no big th'ing.............it's all 6 of one, half dozen of the other. As for the FMC, when in Rome do as the Romans do.

Got to agree. The 73N CA's in LA rock. Know them all and its always like a squadron reunion when we fly. Very laid back group for the most part.
I also use VS a lot and Alt Intv, or whatever it says. No 'fletch' here.

Merry Christmas brothers from other mothers! Have a good one and fly safe.

Hey Ferd,
Id like to be the proverbial fly on the sim wall that hears a fNW guy panic, revert to manual overide and say something like "Engine Failure Climb Mode." This, of course, would shortly be followed by, "FilchMaxContinuousThrustBugMeToVZF." The sound of crickets would be deafening.

Hey I've got a re-route scenario for you experts to analyze for me.
On reserve finishing a 3-day trip.
Last day has three legs worth about 5 hours.
Potential re-route which would add on one leg to a layover then a deadhead back to base the next day.
I know I would get re-route pay for the one extra leg and the last day, but I almost read the contract (23.L.9) to make me believe I would get re-route pay for the entire third day plus the last day.
Also do you get payback days if re-routed into an off day on reserve or just the 1.5X pay?

You guys have been hanging out with the male flight attendants too much. All your talk of felching is grossing me out!!
BTW....Anyone seen the forecast for ATL on Christmas day? 2-3 inches of snow. First time since 1882 that there will be anything more than a trace on Xmas in ATL.
Merry Christmas from the hoser eh.
