A check airman once explained why the company is so particular that the "exact words" on a checklist are used. According to our lawyers, compensatory damages after an accident are pretty much inevitable, but to "open the door" to punitive damages, plaintiffs have to show evidence of negligence. If the voice recorder shows a failure to follow the checklist exactly as written, it can give plaintiff lawyers the opening they need, even if the accident had nothing to do with that particular checklist.

True or not, this is apparently what they're worried about.

That was the most important thing I learned on IOE. Look up.

On the RJ's, not such a big deal, nothing is so high in the air it can drip on you. At Delta, LOOK UP because otherwise you'll come back with oil, hydraulic fluid or worse to decorate your shirt. If the Captain gets the walk around I try to keep the cleaners from hitting the drains in the lavs.

Heh... on the DC-9, practical advice is just to never walk under anything...

Do the NWA aircraft have intercoms so you can wear the full headset instead of a half clamp one?

Are we talking intercoms or hot interphones?

What does it mean when you do a walkaround on an MD-88 and it is not leaking oil?

You are out of oil.

Next question, rhetorical it appears, is if the philosophy is a big bubble theory, then why is everything caveated with liability excuses. If we are so concerned about the liability, then limit the every move that employees make so that the company is really protected. On a similar note, we are in the business of transporting goods and people therefore the exposure to liability is limited at best regarding procedures and how we operate.
Bingo.

Airlines = Common Carriers = Strict Liability

Or, in other words airlines are vicariously liable for the actions of their employees, no matter what.

Meaning they will have to pay out no matter what, it's just a matter of how much.

They (They Company) would also like to have the opening for a way to sue you (The Employee) to get some of the money back that you caused them to lose, which is called..... damn, I forgot. I'll look it up.

Employers indemnity, or indemnity. That's it.

Employers protect themselves from consumers and its employees and when they can't protect themselves from their employees, as in cases of strict liability, they implement policies that allow them to recover damages from the employee.

Hot interphones so you can actually get the benefit of an ANR headset AND hear the other guy which helps.

Some fleets have a hot interphone and some don't. The 320/319 does, I assume the 330 does as well. The 744 and 757 does not, as for the 747 and DC9 I am unsure.....

I think the lack of hot mics are a safety threat.

One of the FO's I was flying with had a Bose noise canceling headset but it was rigged by someone. Flymike? I can't remember, but you take a regular $200 noise canceling headset and this guy has this piece that goes into it so that you can use your mic AND plug in your ipod/iphone and listen to it as well.

Man on the ER I wanted one of those. Now on the 88, I don't seem to have the time. I have to brief as soon as we level off I start talking away. Thanks to the ER, it takes me 15 minutes to brief an arrival. Down from 20 minutes. And I'm lying. But I did want one of those headsets for like $250 or so.
