I thought that was all covered in "Airplane."

I think the engagement thing is getting close to being a little creepy also..... |
I've watched several Captains "over-engaging" the pax and found that most pax just seem to want to be left alone and be on their way. Uncomfortable situation for sure....some guys can pull it off but most pilots do not do it well. For every one passenger that enjoys the engagement I would say five could care less. I've had the pleasure of Deadheading on many DCI flights and that is even more painful to watch. They must get the same corny memos that we do. Just my opinion, but I think keeping the passengers informed is great, saying goodbye professionally at the door is OK, and if a kid wants to say hi to us in the cockpit, ok here are some wings and a baseball card. Fly the airplane safely and let the FAs and PR people do the rest. This engaging the passenger campaign is almost as laughable as the idea that passengers buy tickets on Delta because of the uniform we wear.

I find it borderline creepy as well. I'm almost always working in first/business class and the interaction is just unwanted. Hopefully, this is an idea that will have the same shelf life as removing transponder from the checklist.

Whatever 4th floor genius came up with the hokey passenger engagement movement must be the same moron that thought it was a good idea to put an army of Visa/Amex(whoever they are) people to harass our passengers in the concourses too. Sometimes I wonder if management is trying to run passengers off.

The worst I have ever seen was last October when the captain was asking for donations like the flight attendants do. He would then stand by the exit and hold his hat out like a homeless guy and hat-handle for donations. He then asked me to do it on my legs. I just left and told him I had to take a ****. What can I say? I had to **** a lot that trip.
