Not long ago I had an emergency where the captain gave me the aircraft and radios while he handled all the other duties. Long and short of it is that when it came time for the brief I asked him to go over the approach while I kept flying. His Surface was frozen like frosty and so he took over the flying at that point while I briefed it. We ended up leaving it like that and he did the approach and landing.

My ASAP included that detail: Surface froze up necessitating the transfer of controls. Some how that little nugget didn't make it into the hangar flying narrative that went out to the masses and was nicely glossed over with no reason given for the why the transfer of control was made.

Given the choice, I would have handed over my working Surface to the Captain, not the aircraft. I'd much rather operate an emergency airplane than log one more swipe, pinch or tap on my Surface 2.

Do not know what everyone os complaining about. Microsoft acts like having a Frozen Surface is a good thing. They market it even. My daughters are delighted.

Now that's funny. I see what you did there.

This is progress? My old bag of Jepps never froze up, and unlike a tablet, was virtually theft-proof! :D

Next poll...who prefers a bag full of Jepps and revisions to a Surface? I think you'd have to be nuts, but that's just me...

On the other hand, if we still carried around 30lbs worth of Jepps we could get Delta Health Rewards dollars. Win-win!

Yeah but my shoulder doesn't hurt nearly as much from schlepping 50 lbs of paper around.

True, however the surface has yet to replace the bag of jepps. Airlines that went with the IPad were paperless in 6 months. We are into this 3 years with no sign of getting rid of the bag of Jepps.

Not all. One company went with the surface and was paperless about 6 months later.

And unless something has changed VERY recently, UAL still carries ship sets. So they don't have to lug them around, but neither do DAL pilots ;)
