Which makes that number even more crazy. They put their perceived sick abuse at $50 million, which it is likely much less than that, yet just awarded $80 million to one person and lost billions in fuel hedging. Seems like if they want to save $50 million, they are fully capable of doing so.

I'd love to see how they come up with 50 million. Is this an annual cost or total cost since when??? 1985?...
I really find it hard to believe that even regular sick leave is a 50 million dollar cost.
Sick usage is a cost of doing business in any industry. It's time for DL management to get over it and move on..........

Another irony, most of the trips were covered by a reserve pilot making the guarantee so that sick-out actually costs nothing. But since they don't have to show their work, they can call it anything they want.

Where did the $50 million figure come from? What is their definition of abuse?
I've heard from company sympathizers there are some 250 abusers among us and that these supposed abusers use all of their sick leave every year.
If all 250 use all 270 hours and at a average rate of $200/hr(my estimation, YMMV) that comes out to $13.5 million. Nowhere near $50 million quoted and as pointed out previously most of that time covered by reserves under reserve guarantee so at no additional cost to the company. And even the healthiest of abuser probably uses some of his sick leave when actually sick.
So even if there are some abusers it is a relatively trivial cost to the company.
SL concessions were never about abusers. They are only aimed at reducing legitimate sick leave use by harassment and intimidation.

Like I said, does it really matter anymore how they came up with the likely over-inflated number? They just paid 1 person $80 million in 1/2 year, $30 million more than a number that they say is bothering them, that 13,000 people contributed to.
If $50 million really bothers them, they could easily solve that by paying 1 person $50 million less and that person would still make $30 million for 1/2 year.
It's all about how you present your case to the NMB. And this is a huge factor in play to present.

I, too, have never been convinced there is an official definition of sick leave abuse. It seems more of what's convenient at the time it's an issue.
That said, with regard to your $13.5M claim I don't think you're taking into consideration the GS or WS needed to cover some of those trips. Yes, that's a company problem since they keep staffing extremely tight and don't have adequate reserves.
