The Fable of the Rogue NC
I notice we have some very imaginative story-tellers putting up some very nice submissions in the Fiction category. The Science-Fiction stuff with the light-sabers is pretty cool too. Here's an entry in the Children's section. I wish it was strictly Fiction.
There once was a little boy, who wanted, above all things, a whole MEC Administration for Christmas. He wanted the Chairman (the really cool red one!), and all the little committees, so he could play with the whole set, and line them up as he saw fit, and play War with them.
Oh, what a Christmas this would be!
But when Christmas came around, ”Santa” split the set between him and his older brother, and the older brother got the Chairman, and the NC he wanted so badly!
Oh, what a terrible Christmas this was…
But Mother said “Cheer up!”, and go play War, along with your brother, against the neighbors. See if you can win together!
But when it came time play War, the little boy who didn’t control the NC didn’t enjoy playing with his own pieces; he remained sullen. Even when they won, there was no joy in it for the little boy. He simply quietly vowed to someday have a whole MEC Administration, just for himself. That would be fun!
When Mother asked how the game went, the little boy just blurted out that his big brother didn’t even know how to play with the NC, and it was a stupid NC, and it was broken, and it just kept getting away anyway!
Mother frowned briefly, but gave the little boy a hug, and asked the older brother to take better care of his NC, and to share more.
The following week, the brothers controlled the NC together. Oh, what fun it was!
Until they lost.
When they lost together, the little boy just cried, his face crimson.
“Mother, Mother!”, he said when he got home, “the NC got away from us again! My brother doesn’t know how to handle it! It’s not really a good NC anyway: the little strings are all tangled up, and everything!”
Mother frowned briefly, but decided that perhaps the little boy was mature enough to handle the entire MEC, and asked the older brother to let him play by himself a while. And he was so proud, the next day, to take the MEC out by himself! What a day this was!
But when it came time to play War, the little boy didn’t know exactly what to do. He had always thought he would be great, especially with the NC pieces, but he wasn’t sure if he would win the first match! This was not easy! This made the little boy very nervous. “How am I going to explain this to my friends, if I don’t win?”, worried the little boy. He got so worried about it, that he got the strings even more tangled up; so very, very worried and upset, that he got into a fight with the little kid next door, and ran out before the end of the game! Oh, no!
Furious, the little boy took his MEC set home, and on the way, threw the NC in the trash. And this Chairman! “They’re stupid anyway”, thought the little boy!
This time, mother frowned much longer, when the little boy came back empty-handed. She raised a finger to interrupt his excuses.“ I told you to play nicely with your NC, and all the other pieces”, Mother said. “But I was going to lose”, cried the little boy, his face crimson again!
“Now, now”, mother said. “That’s just not true: you didn’t lose; you just need to get back out there, make peace with the boy you hit, and play as intelligently as you can. You may not win every round, but I bet you score a lot of points, and I bet you come home having learned something”.
But the little boy wouldn’t take his fingers out of his ears. He wouldn’t listen to Mother, wouldn’t listen to his brother; he wouldn’t listen to anyone. He just wouldn’t cross the street, and he just wouldn’t face his friends. He wouldn’t even pick up his MEC set out of the trash.
And so the little boy sulked during his entire time-out, and what a long time out it was!
And the neighbors had a perfect record at War, that entire season.
The end.

The only time you remind your children of their great effort, base hits and points scored is when they lose. If you have a win to talk about, the mood on the ride home is much different. Well, we keep getting base hits Mom!
Yup you did!, with a smile on her face as she thinks LOSER.
