Advice for a newhire willing to relocate? Move to Eastern PA. Not only will you be able to drive to work and sit short-call at home, you'll be in the junior base and your seniority will go further.

 

You must live in AZ, because I am based in NY, and the humidity here can get raunchy. If that is your overriding concern, Utah is the second driest state in the union.

We're not even dead-set on ATL. We're still having an internal family debate between commuting, ATL and SLC. We want the living conditions of SLC, the job flexibility of ATL (along with the never move again guarantee), and the school stability of SAT .

 

If you go to the mountains pay very close attention to the schools. They can be very iffy at best.
If you choose SLC and you are Mormon no problems. I lived there for 10 years. If you are not Mormon pay attention again to where you live. Each HS has a ward house next door and that is where most after school activities take place. Your kids can end up excluded from many things. If you head up to heathanville(Park City) that will not be a issue but houses are not cheap.
If you are non Mormon and want to live in the valley get a good non Mormon real estate agent. The areas in the valley can very a lot on how your children will be accepted. A good agent will get you to the better options.
If you have anyone who has annoyed you lately visit the Temple and sign their name and address in the guest book!

Keep one last thing in mind. If you live in the west a 6 AM departure from a Eastern airport really sucks. If you live in the east a 6 AM west coast departure is a non event.

 

This^^^^^^ I moved to Heber City when I got hired in 91, and stopped into the local drive in diner. Asked for a cup of coffee, and it was a classic pin-drop quiet, everybody in the whole place turned and looked kind of event. It has been Californicated since then, but I will never forget that... But great golf, probably the most underrated golf in the country. Heber has an airport so if you are into FLAP flying, it is a good place. And the skiing is second to none.

 

My best friend stayed in SLC to raise his non-Mormon family. I left. It has been a problem for him. The kids were ostracized. Now that college is here, he is having to pay for out of state schools just to get the kids acclimated to the rest of the world.

Bite the bullet, move to ATL. Plenty of places to live. I'm on the south side of town. Twenty-five/Thirty minutes to the parking lot. Fayette and Coweta counties have decent schools. We are well air-conditioned. You will get used to the humidity. My wife wanted to leave Park City because it was too dry.

 

Sailingfun is making some good points. Schools are very good in East Cobb and the typical drive to the Atlanta Airport is about 30 to 35 minutes. I give myself an hour and have never been late; even on those inevitable days when a passport or ID gets someplace it isn't supposed to be.

Schools are all 9+ ... Cobb County is well managed, has reasonable taxes, good quality of life and is kinda in the middle of the stuff to do (lakes, mountains, city, shopping, new Braves stadium, etc...) Prices run $250k for "meh" to $500k for "wow, what a house!" The good deals are pretty much gone. The area is a stable and appreciating market.

As a junior guy I might not try to live in Tennessee, but I hear a lot of good things about life along the river from Knoxville to Chattanooga.

Well there you have it. The perfect answer to the man's question. If you don't like the neighborhood, just untie and float downstream. By the time you get too far down stream you are senior enough to afford a motor.

All the way around to just this side of Gatlinburg is pretty close to what I think would be great. Lots of little airports and flying activity too, if you're into that sort of thing.
