FDX - Vancouver & Anchorage
Hey Folks,
I am planning on a cruise from Vancouver to Anchorage with my family.
Can anyone tell me is our crew hotel in Vancouver anywhere near the pier where the cruise ships leave? Also what is the crew hotel in Vancouver and Anchorage.
Any ideas on things to do in Anchorage in July?
Thanks

Well you'll enjoy the 50 draft beers at Humpy's and make sure you have the plank halibut. Also check out the Glacier Brewhouse. Glacier BrewHouse | Where Alaskans meet Alaskans
Family ideas: the hotel desk clerk recommended all of the following things and I enjoyed them all.
Kincaid Park - West end of Anchorage. Nice hiking trails and plenty of moose to see.
Anchorage: Kincaid Park Trail Map | ALASKA.ORG
About an hour north of Anchorage you'll find the Matanuska Glacier. It's an awesome experience to walk on the mouth of a glacier.

About an hour south of Anchorage you'll find the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center.

Have Fun!

Definitely echo the Wildlife Conservation Center in Portage; I'm in there on a regular basis with my current (non-flying) gig.
If you're driving south at all the Exit Glacier trail in Seward is a good one. Also the Sealife Center and if you like dogs the Iditaride, both in Seward.
Also check out kayaking at Eklutna lake north of town. There's an outfit that can set you up to kayak to one end of the lake then bike back along a fairly level trail. Easy for kids.
Decent family hiking from the Glen Alps trail head on Powerline Pass, or for something a little more adventurous go up Flattop from the same trail head.
A flightseeing trip up to Knik Glacier is a quick and easy trip, and really inexpensive if you know anyone with access to an aircraft. I'm thinking hard about getting a checkout soon myself.....
If you can spare a day from your family and want a real Alaskan aviation experience you can jumpseat for a day on a DC-6. Be dressed ready to work because they'll make you help unload.
You planning on staying in ANC or drive around a bit?

May plan to live there if the wife likes the area and it works out best for our fam.
Planning a trip to Denali on the rail and spend a night up there unless that's not a good idea. Seems expensive...

Check out Alaska Transportation Group for transport between the dock in Seward and ANC. They do a tour through the Wildlife Conservation Center on the way up and I would highly recommend that.
The train to Denali I've heard is a great experience although I've never done it myself. My sister gas though. The bus tour through the park is excellent, although it's a long day.
If you're trying to cover a lot of ground you may want to check out renting an RV if your family dynamic can make that work. It only seems expensive until you consider that you can forgo hotels and lets you be a little more creative with your itinerary.
Good luck on getting your family to move up here. I don't know about Purple but reserve goes senior in the summer at AS. Be sure to check out Eagle River and the Valley while you're here. Better bang for the buck in the real estate market.
