Are hats a required part of the pilot uniform?

No, but the management types spend a lot of energy advocating them. I wonder what percentage of pilots actually wear them.

I have no problem with anyone wearing the hat. It’s a personal choice. But for the love of all that is professional, PLEASE buy the right size hat and wear them correctly! The band should be tight enough to keep the hat from sliding down your head and touching your ears. If your band is touching your ears, and your head is poking out the top, you are wrong.

This goes for a large number of mainline pilots as well. They look like pretty foolish and sloppy wearing them like they do.

I loved having the hat for trips with super early shows. I’d shower the night before then roll out of bed and Into the van.

I misread your post. I thought you said having the hat for TIPS with super early shows. My vision is you go around the gate to the PAX that show up 2 hours before flight time, and collect change in your hat. Whatever your preference. Lol

Hats are OPTIONAL. If you want to wear one, wear it correctly, if you don't... Just don't bring it. Personally I don't want to be mistaken for a skycap while waiting for the hotel van (yes it's happened and part of why I ditched the hat)
