FMLA... that is what it is for.

 

Look up FMLA, not sure if caring for a parent is a way to get it but it's a federal program allowing employees to be protected and take care of family members.

Despite some of the venomous snakes on here, a vast majority of the pilots at Envoy are good people with our own families.

Yes, your chief pilot can approve a short term leave of absence. I can't recall off the top of my head if a chief can approve a max of 30 days off or if it's more than that without having to take things a step further and go up the chain. Beyond a leave of absence, this also may fall under FMLA.

 

FMLA only kicks in after one year of work. The only way to get time off is via CP. The guy above me explains it pretty well.

 

So I'll see my family 1/3 of my life?! Now I see why major pilots make that kind of money. Big price to pay to live your life on the road.

 

It's not as tragic as it sounds. I spend way more time at home than I ever did working a 9-5...just coming home to "sleep in your own bed" loses its appeal really quick. As does sitting in bumper to bumper traffic two times a day, 5 days a week for the rest of your life. No thanks.

Yes, the company pays for it.

 

How do you spend way more time at home when you sleep there only 11 days a month? So sleeping in a hotel on a short overnight in Fargo is more appealing then putting the kids to bed and sleeping with your wife? Not trying to be a smart a$$ about this I'm just really confused about leaving my current career. I have my 1500 and make regional captain money now but I'm maxed out as far as pay so I know flying has more upside in the long run. trying to weigh the pros and cons on being away for more pay.

 

Same here, I used to be away m-f from 8 to 6 and sometimes required to work saturdays with no extra pay. I was a sales manager for a global company and my phone rang during my son's baseball games or while having dinner with my family.
I now go to work and leave work behind when I get home. I bid reserve if I want to be at home more, and it works most of the time. It is very rare that i'll be away for 5 days all the time. It happens, but is not really that often. Sometimes they call me for an overnight and im done by 7 am the next day.
If I need specific days off, I bid a hard line, trip trade and 90% of the time I get what I need.
We have visited more than 10 different countries thanks to our flight benefits. It is cheaper for us to spend a weekend in Paris than renting a cabin by a lake in Texas.
After 3 years, I still love this job and have no regrets.
