The EMB-145

I am going to be bidding the 145. My class date is next month. What is the overall opinion of the 145 from a pilot's perspective? What does it do great? What does it do not so great?

Thanks in advance for your time!

It’s a good airplane. Don’t expect amazing speed or performance, she’s a pug when it’s hot. The FMS leaves a lot to be desired, but it does the job. It’s a great first jet and an excellent plane to cut your teeth on. It handles well, the systems aren’t overly complex, and you’ll fly with a lot of great captains. Best of luck to you.

Thank you for your reply. Looking forward to flying with Envoy.

Fun to hand fly, lots of feedback coming through the yoke. Slow cruiser, terrible climber - you say "unable - performance" more than you ever thought you would in a jet. Big fat safety margins on everything, hard to kill yourself with it and tons of nice round easily memorized numbers in the book. Quite a few bizarre idiosyncracies. Cuts your power with no warning besides the flight instrument/EICAS indications pulling back when it needs the air for the automatic ice protection. Rickety and cheap construction, makes a lot of noise. FMS has most of what you'd need but is very poorly executed - inefficient, counterintuitive layout and functions hidden away in contexts that don't make sense. Make sure your big ol nuts aren't in the path of that yoke when your captain makes his first landing on IOE, or you're not going to have to worry about sending kids to college.

Overall I like it.

Funniest thing I have ever read on APC. Ever! :D

My biggest complaint about the EMB-145 isn't about the plane at all, its about the schedules. The 145 does most of the short hops for Envoy so you'll see a lot more 5 leg days and really low credit hour OT opportunities.

Podrick 07-17-2018 12:59 PM

As stated 5 leg days can wear you down, but if they’re short legs and all through your home base they’re not bad, unless it’s go home day.

On the other hand we have way more of a variety in flying compared to the 175 and especially the CRJ. You’ll do flying through all 4 bases plus Boston and Charlotte. The airplane itself is definitely made for shorter legs, has lots of kinks and you’ll learn all the tricks on the line.

It’s not fast but overall it’s a solid airplane that’s very forgiving, can be flown almost 250 to the marker and has good landing performance. Pay attention to takeoff performance, especially when it’s warm. And don’t be surprised when it starts acting strange when it’s cold, or when the gpu is plugged in.

Oh yeah, I forgot about that but it wouldn't be fair to the jungle jet not to mention it. The flip side to not being able to climb is that the thing will fall out of the sky on command. Very reassuring when they leave you high as they often do.
