Non-rev pilots can use an FA jumpseat only on Expressjet aircraft. I've never seen it though, they usually take the flight deck.

I've had a few pilots use the FA jumpseat on my flights.

Amen. It all changed after 9-11. I know CAL got really good at filling the seats on all of it's flights. My wife won't even try to non-rev anymore.

Jumpseating works at least 15 times out of 16. Doesn't help for the family, but you can get just about anywhere guaranteed if you can jumpseat.
