Default pilot luggagequestion from a new guy

Good Morning, I have a few newbe question.

I am starting with XJT soon. What are the requirements for my carryon?

Do y'all just carry a carryon or do y'all carry a second bag? (like a backpack for Ipad and headset)

Should I wait till I get there to buy a new one?

I am asking because I have a trip that I need one for before my start date.

Most use luggage works. If you wait until you get to training you can save $100 or so on it off crew outfitters prices. Most also carry a flight bag. You can save some money on some good options there too at the schoolhouse

Look at StrongBags. His bags hold up over time. Mine has been going on 7 years with no issues.

These bags are designed by a SWA CA and he still runs the company.

The only requirement is that your luggage must be all black.

Everyone gets the metal luggage works bag. These bags were designed to withstand about 40 lbs of publications being slung and hung on them, so they are probably overkill for today's EFB carrying pilot.

If you want to look like a pilot, get LW. if you don't, I recommend costco for the warranty.

One other thing, you can’t wear a backpack. You can carry it if you want but you can’t put it on while in uniform

Since there's no longer a need to carry the big flight kit loaded with paper, I generally recommend the plastic frame luggage works bags. Much cheaper and much lighter and plenty durable.

If you will be commuting, I recommend the metal framed bag. Commuter bags spend quite a bit of time in cargo and the beatings on the bag add up. It will hold up better over the long run.

Get a cooler type lunch box bag. It’ll let you bring some food from home and avoid pricey airport food. Also you can stick your emergency ration ramen and oatmeal packs in there.

But with the Newhire bonus you’ll be able to afford airport food!
