Helps if you know a few people that work for whomever you’re applying to.

In all fairness......the felony dude is a VERY unique situation. Don’t expect that outcome to happen with any sort of regularity.

I don’t know them personally, but anytime there is a “checkride failures” thread, a person or 2 will always show up and say they have 4 or more, and made it to the big show.

I don’t have a spotless record, and I was able to make it. I also know somebody with a felony who made it to a different Legacy. It has a LOT to do with how you own your past, and how it has shaped the person you are today. The hardest part of getting hired is getting the interview. Once you have the interview, it’s up to you.

To answer your question.......if you’re concerned about your online app being flagged and tossed out, hire an application review service to go over your app and fix anything that can be fixed. You’d be surprised how easily a good candidate can be ignored because of simple mistakes on the app, which is why it’s SO important to get it right if you know you have some black marks working against you.

In my case, I went to job fairs and hustled, which netted a couple interviews....but the one that mattered was my CPP interview. I did professional interview prep and really focused hard on taking responsibility for all perceived negatives in my past. I knew I would have to talk about certain things, and being prepared made all the difference. They know not everyone is perfect. They want to hear what happened, what you learned from it, and how it’s made you a better pilot/employee/human being. It also has a LOT to do with HOW you say things. Many people have been turned down for saying “I already fly United passengers” in a very entitled way. I answered the same question with slightly different wording, and it was received well. I told them I felt like I would be a good fit for United because I’ve been flying in the United system for many years and I’m very familiar with the culture and the product. Basically I told them I already fly their passengers, but I didn’t sound like an entitled and bitter prick. Attitude is everything. We are ALL pretty much qualified after a few years. That’s not what makes the difference.

One thing that has helped me in the meantime has been calling the recruiting departments of some airlines if I can manage on finding a phone number. I’ve generally had positive experiences doing that. I also feel like it helps me talk to recruiters better.
I definitely don’t have a spotless pilot record but I feel like I have some things that I can turn into a positive light. One recruiter even said they’d rather hire someone who has faced adversity rather than someone who has never really failed anything before. I suppose they get so used to being successful that the first time they encounter a true setback they could react in unpredictable ways
