Read that again in context, they were replying to someone replying to someone who basically said “oh do you hate American and SWA for not being ALPA”? The other person said “for me it’s either Union, or non-union”, to which they (sarcastically) said “yeah, because APA/SWAPA are known for rolling over”.

it rubbed me wrong too at first but after a couple re-reads I think I just misinterpreted what they were saying.

 

I think most pilots don't blame someone for selling out their soul to SkyWest to avoid a lengthy commute. It is those East coast flight school noobs who want to go to SkyWest cause they got a free lanyard and they believe the hype.

The fortunate part of "choosing" SKYW is, that when theirs is the most expensive contract, and the concessions come, they won't have any pesky spines or representation getting in the way of the cuts.

 

As someone that lives California and has kids, I still chose XJT over skywest. But everyone has different priorities. Mine were to work for a good regional even if it meant I had to commute to IAH. In hindsight, it was the right decision, even by looking at it by days at home since XJT has a better vacation bidding system that doesn’t require any staffing requirements.

Anyway, I have lots of friends at skywest or that were at skywest. And if the majority of them are like my friends, being non-union didn’t even enter into the equation as a factor on where to work. I understand that as we all were once uneducated to the importance of pilot unions at some point when starting our path to the flight deck. Some of us just learned it earlier than others. I had the good fortune of having a Delta and FedEx captain as mentors before I was a CFI who both told me of the important work their unions do for the entire profession and aviation in general.

On the other hand, they have voted down unions on three separate occasions. Although the last being in 2007 timeframe. And there has been crickets ever since despite the obvious benefits since then (KCM). Not to mention all the other behind the scene safety and security benefits gained throughout the decades. So it’s hard to oversee that, to me at least.

In all seriousness, as a former (twice furloughed, once during the shutdown) Waterskier, I'm sorry for what's happening and I hope you have a soft landing, in or out of aviation.

 

I wasn’t around OO in 2007, but I have family that was, as well as many conversations with the pilots that are actively pushing for another ALPA vote.
Just as a clarification from my understanding of that last vote.
The pilot group did indeed vote in a union.... but somehow (and this is where my info is fuzzy) during the vote tally, every person that did not vote was counted as a ‘no’ vote.
With those non-votes counted as no’s, it was “voted” down.
An effort to take the company to court over turning non-votes into no’s quickly failed.

Anyone who has first hand knowledge of that one please fill in the gaps.

But to say that all OO pilots are anti-union is patently false.

I know, it’s not good enough for the APC group, but it has to count for something.

 

And just to clarify, I didn’t say all skywest pilots are anti-union.

The issue with non-voters back then has been resolved with a new law that was passed since that vote.

The only court issue that was litigated during that vote was one that Skywest management lost against ALPA. It had to do with illegal practices Skywest management was employing during the vote. I don’t remember the specifics but I’m sure someone can find it if they search federal court documents.
