Sure seems like a bad time for the R&I comm chair to resign. What's going on at Kirby Parkway?

What am I missing about being an MEC rep? Why do some feel this sense of power? Is it similar to commanding an aircraft carrier? Is it like being a pretend CEO of a fortune 100 company? Why the politics? Why the long-term memories and personal feelings? Is there some secret MEC pay bonus I don't know about? My LEC works much much harder than I do every month and often gets very little support in return when asking the LEC for some help. Other than the "joy of giving" why would anybody put up with this crap.

Yes, I volunteer for the association as a blue collar worker but to do the MEC thing full time...or even be an LEC rep. Why?

As I hear it, DR (the same rep that led the mandate to negotiators to not negotiate options on the A plan, and then led the "Gang of Four" against the contract because it didn't have A plan improvements), now wants the whole R&I Committee gone to settle that old score. In fact, we now have TWO National ALPA Committee Chairmen that DR opposes for any committee in our own MEC.

A committee chairman resigned because he didn't get his way. How does that constitute chaos?

People seem to forget the MEC is composed of pilots we elect from among ourselves and who we task with providing executive oversight and strategic guidance for our Association.

There also seems to be a growing misconception that a single member of the MEC can control the whole body. It is a democratic body, and the actions taken by the MEC are founded on majority vote.

The committee chairman who is angry at a single MEC member and has decided to pick up his marbles and go home needs to realize it was the majority of the MEC, not just one member, who did not endorse his choice of committee member. Further, he needs to realize MEC committees work for the MEC, and not the other way around.

You won't read that story on JetFlyer, where criticizing KT will get your posts deleted, but it's open season on DR.

I think the problem most people have with it is the secretive nature of things and the perceived attitude that "We're the experts, you just fly the line and we'll let you know when it is time to put on a bag tag or wear a new catchy lanyard" I understand the necessity for some secrecy in negotiations but most of us can't help but wonder what negotiating opportunities might have been squashed, by a select few, without most of us being aware or having a say in what options were pushed.

I also typically cringe when I see an out of the blue settlement agreement posted. It is usually advertised as 'clearing up some grey areas' but often amounts to a weakened interpretation of the CBA.

I'm sure for block reps it is very difficult to choose options and vote on what the majority of your block wants rather than push what you personally think is best.

Are you claiming "most of us" believe there is some procedure whereby "a select few" can supersede the majority of the MEC?

Let this sink in: If the MEC chose a path, it was the result of a MAJORITY vote of representatives elected by us, representing us.Your vote was represented. My vote was represented. The MAJORITY prevailed.

Sure we voted them in so we were represented. My point is maybe they don't always later follow what the majority would want. (age 65 comes to mind) I've heard that many of the retirement changes and options we are exploring now were blocked, without our collective knowledge, during the actual contract negotiations.
