Jeff, I totally agree. This is wrong. If this TA passes, pilots on LTD deserve the bonus as much as anyone. Someone out on LTD might have been here for 25 years and not get a bonus, while someone who has been here for a year would get it? Makes no sense to me.
And for anyone who thinks they don't really care, it doesn't affect them, think twice. You have no idea of what your status will be when this, or TA #2 version is signed.

Is LTD considered a leave of absence? I don't see that spelled out as such anywhere in the contract and in fact see places in the contract where LTD and leave of absence are listed as separate, distinct items, e.g. FDA LOA Q.1.

So a pilot who has been on LTD for the last 8-10 years should get the bonus but a pilot that retired at some point in 2013 gets practically nothing. I can see the argument that the pilot who eventually returns from LTD may deserve the bonus, but what about the one that stays on LTD until retirement. Hard to call them a member of the crewforce.
It would be easy for me to argue that you're a member of the crewforce as long as you're a dues paying member in good standing ...

Going out on LTD can happen to anyone. If a dues paying member in good standing has the misfortune of going through that, they should still get their 'signing bonus'. Maybe it can be argued one way or another by lawyers, but the fact is, these guys need to get the bonus as well. It is just the CORRECT and DECENT thing to do. And I happen to know CD's hands were somewhat tied with this, as he is a correct and decent man.
One more thing that needs to be fixed, on the list of about a dozen things, if we are unified in voting this unacceptable TA down.

However, wasn't this decided by the union, not the company? And they decided this based upon earlier precedent?

LTD, Personal leave, unpaid medical leave and disciplinary suspension are listed as inactive statuses for bonus money on the Lump Sum Payment Distribution video.

Vote the TA up or down. Its not sweet of a deal that if it dies we will mourn, and we might get a better deal. Or we might not...but again...the opportunity of cost of rejection is not that high.
I don't recall CD in a cubicle very much the last few years, however. Flying back from Europe in the MD not long ago I was impressed with his flying and cockpit leadership. He's done a lot of work over the years for ALPA, including helping get the union on the property the first time along with a bunch of other hard working guys.
He worked well with the Webb and Stratton groups when tasked on any project. He worked hard to try to keep committees focused and not killing each other. He has reached out personally to many pilots during their personal times of crisis. If he's been in an office anytime in the last 10 years its because someone begged him to be there to help solve a problem.
I don't know if he's gonna be a "perfect" MEC chairman. I don't think there is such an animal.
But I will say this...reading some of the crap here guys post about some of the most sincere and hard working dudes I know makes it pretty clear to me I have about zero interest in ever doing anything for ALPA again. The job is tough enough. Getting **** on by the guys you are trying hard to help makes hanging out in Hong Kong in my flat a much more pleasant choice.
Company man? Geez. Do you even KNOW what it was like here in the 90s for these guys? Keep typing. I'm sure you've got a ton of great solutions for all our issues with the company.

Albie speaks absolute truth.
If these guys had ever closed down an overseas bar w/CD, they would also know the truth of what a great guy he really is .
Alas, so many knaves and fools in the world .

I feel so much better now about our direction, as a union, than I have for the last few years!
Cheers,
