Yes Memphis has a crime problem. It is driven mostly by generational poverty and drugs. The drug situation brings in gangs. There are some great neighborhoods in and around Memphis. There are some good school systems as well. For the most part, if you’re in a good area the crime will most likely never affect you. Living in base provides the most days off at home or the ability to pick up extra work and to make a lot of money. Tennessee is an income tax free state which itself is worth at least $1-2M if invested properly. However if you choose to live out of base, FedEx’s jumpseat program makes it very easy to get to work. However, unlike the major airlines, FedEx discourages against jumpseating directly into a long haul flight.

I think Memphis offers something for everyone. If you like downtown city life, the area around Main Street and South Main downtown have grown substantially and offer a smaller city life with plenty of nightlife and great restaurants. Mid-town is seeing explosive growth with the addition of several large high end apartment buildings and is experiencing revitalization of older homes. If the suburbs are your thing, Germantown and Collierville are safe, mature communities. Whereas Arlington and Lakeland are the new places to be with large homes and a very good school system. If you want small town, country life or rural life, there’s several really nice areas just outside Memphis to include some cities in Mississippi and Arkansas. Several folks live in the Nashville area and drive to work (2-3 hour drive).

Don't regret your choices. You’ve ended up where you wanted. I am flying with 28 year old civilian pilots in the right seat and am amazed at how wealthy they’ll be assuming they make the right decisions at their age.

For planning purposes, does anyone have any insight on what to expect after indoc? Time gap between that and equipment training. Also am I to assume that finding a place to stay and transport are on our own at that time? Appreciate any input and apologize if this has been stated in past parts of this thread.

You could have several weeks off and you could have one day off like me after indoc. And you are correct about the transportation and lodging after indoc.

I recently applied to FedEx, I am wondering if anyone used a gouge prep site such as Ready-Set-Takeoff? Are they worth the $500? While reading through posts, it seems hit or miss as to using a prep site or not! Thoughts please!

Yes! Back in the day I used Emerald Coast Consulting. RST is new and focuses on a different portion of the FedEx and Delta interview. I recommend using both.

Do not show up to an airline interview without getting some consultant help.

Do not go to a prep unless you have an interview. You want to get the most updated information you can.

I had Emerald Coast look over my app. There were no glaring errors, but they provided some very good feedback. I also used Cage Consulting out of Denver a year or two later. They also provided useful information about the minutia, like using the proper font so the application could be sorted easier by the computer. Albeit 6 years ago, but I am glad I did it.

If you get on at 40, and you can do the give or take math, you can conservatively expect to make up to 7-10 million dollars or more in your career if you work til 65. Spend the $500. Emerald Coast and RST was invaluable to me.

Also, buy a ticket to come here for the interview. Don't just jumpseat on someone. Come up a day early. Schedule a last minute mock HR interview with Emerald Coast on that day. Tell your family you are unavailable during those 3 days. Spend and hour or two a day for 3-4 weeks prepping, rehearsing TMAAT stories, polishing your logbooks, etc.
