Caboose of this week's class got the 767 (not sure it there were any Bus).

SSN has nothing to do with hand picking MD pilots, my class had 5 MD pilots... I would have been senior to 3 of them but they got picked for the MD :| Last one was a 00XX SSN so he was happy NOT to be the Caboose MD pilots are selected by some super-secret formula of large cargo AF pilots or large cargo Atlas guys (kidding but not... who knows)

I think that it actually used to have a very appealing/diverse Bid Pack and trip selection, but as they retire the fleet that won't be the case. Also, older cockpit, but folks really seem to enjoy flying it.

From my limited experience and polling the pilot group:

777 - Awesome International trips/Beautiful Plane
MD - Diverse Bid Pack (Both International and Domestic flying)
767 - Rapidly growing fleet and majority of domestic flying
757 - older planes showing their age, narrow body pay, too many legs
Airbus - Diverse Bid Pack, some nice trips, but shrinking fleet

First off want to thank all who have posted on this thread. I am considering putting my stuff in at FedEx. I'm a 12 year regional LCA and haven't thought of FedEx much until reading about the relative ease of commuting on company metal and listing 3 weeks out. Also some info seems to be out there about trips starting and or ending with deadheads to possibly your home airport. I am trying to avoid a commute for the rest of my 17.5 years but the career earnings at FedEx are making me consider it. I've been commuting for over 10 years to a regional job and I've about had it with that stress factor.

That all being said I live in North Jersey and moving is NOT an option. I see EWR, ABE, and SWF could be used to commute on FedEx metal to MEM and maybe IND. It seems that almost everyone gets MEM as a new hire. With my situation, any information about how heavy the NYC area is for commuters, how often trips that DH to or from those 3 airports, and being a very low SSN number and getting possibly the last choice of aircraft in class IF i get a CJO - would my QOL eventually be better than commuting to a regional?

Thank you in advance folks.

I don't live there (I do commute there) but EWR has to be one of the easiest commutes. Take a look at the FDX jump seats available between EWR and MEM or IND.

WSMFpilot,

Hell, after the first year, just buy first class tickets. You'll be able to afford them, that is of course, if you get the job.

Thank you. So with shrinking fleet, not as many coming in behind, means not moving up as quick?

Well people will also be bidding out/upgrading and it isn't very likely people will bid in on top of you.

I think a recent company communication had both the Airbus and MD fleets being around 'well into the next decade' in their words. Just giving some perspective on what shrinking means. At this point, a lot of is shifting trip and city patterns more than anything.

Last projection showed the Airbus bidpack only losing 2 aircraft through 2019... after that who knows. Most of the -10's will probably see the desert first
