ficone,

There's nothing better than being on the jet that services your home station (well, truth be told, there are better things, but for a new hire, probably not), for a number of reasons: 1) when you first check out on the jet, you can sit up front, while jumpseating to and from work, and learn bunches of stuff, some of which you shouldn't do; 2) you can observe those guys in the left seat to see if you'd enjoy working with them, or more importantly, if you wouldn't; 3) you could be called to operate a trip that you were scheduled to J/S on, into or out of your home station; 4) after two years, they will give you your own parking spot at your home ramp.... just kidding, but you will become very friendly with the guys at your ramp.

Best of luck. You'll love the Bus!

How long is reserve running right now on the A300? The 757 upgrade is still sitting at 2 to 2 1/2 years correct? Finding myself in the same predicament.

depends really, I think right now on the bus its about a year, maybe 10 months until you can get a VTO line, but that will likely include some trips and reserve.

About the 2 year upgrade, I believe the Junior guy on the 757 was only awarded the 757 captain spot at 11 months on the property. He still has not gone to training yet. which will likely be at least another year to 18 months. I would not count on a 757 upgrade as quickly as you are thinking.

Take the wide body.

Not sure what your reference points are, but for a guy hired into the Bus last summer they had about 3 months of reserve after training, to VTOs in the months following that, and can hold the bottom lines currently.

The caboose from the June '16 class is holding a line on the Bus in July '17.

For a guy hired in Nov '16 into the MD...RA for the first 3 bid months, then into VTO. Could hold RA/RB/R24/VTO in month 4+, depending on many external factors.

Default Hong Kong

May I ask what flying in and out of HKG is like for a new hire? I believe it's actually Guangzhou but HKG base?

1)Fleet
2)Housing allowance
3)Visa and do you have to pay tax in HKG
4)The foreign exclusion exemption and it's implications
5)If you go to HKG, how long must you stay
6)Junior Captain
7)Is it worth it

Thank you.

Correct, Pilots are based in HKG, but hub is in CAN. Most all trips start and end with a deadhead. Either to/from CAN, or an outstation.
1)Fleet
Currently 767(6+1 spare)/757(4+1 spare). HKG pilots are required to maintain currency on both.
2)Housing allowance
Currently ~$4800Usd/mo. A index computation is made periodically to determine amount. About due to be recalculated soon.
3)Visa and do you have to pay tax in HKG
Company takes care of all visas and immigration paperwork, you do not directly pay HK taxes. FedEx has a tax equalization program that makes it to about what you would pay in the US
4)The foreign exclusion exemption and it's implications
No foreign exclusion due to the tax equalization program. FedEx uses a tax preparer to do your taxes for you.(Required)
5)If you go to HKG, how long must you stay
Depends on the package you take. They have 2 different packages too detailed to discuss here.(Storage/shipping options, selling your current house etc.) But most take the package that requires a minimum of 2 years. Could work out to be around 3+ years depending on bids/training and other factors. There are some provisions to allow to get out right at 2 years though if there isn't a bid available
6)Junior Captain
Junior CA Seniority#2927. 10+ years longevity.
7)Is it worth it
To each their own. Depends on your value of worth. Most out here in HK want to be here.
Thank you.You're Welcome😀

Default Housing

Is the housing allowance considered income and taxed as part of total income or separate. I think I read somewhere that because Hong Kong is expensive, you get a credit for housing?

I think I read that if you go to Hong Kong it's 100$ to start but how much would you actually fly?

CAN is like a two hour drive form Hong Kong no? That would make for a long day(s). Do you also not need a visa for China? Do you also not need a visa for Hong Kong? This is what I mean by is it worth it?

It seems like a good deal but complex. Is FDX getting enough people to go to Hong Kong because it's a long ways away!

Do you guys/gals get passes/ID90s on other carriers and can you get first or bizzo class? This would be for family to go home on vacay. I know jumpseat is available but again Hong Kong is way over there.

Thanks again.

Allowance is not taxed. Yes, HK is very expensive

First year pay is $100/hr plus international override and international per diem. After that, it's widebody pay rates. Junior pilots are holding secondary lines mostly. Usually made up of trips. Some reserve lines too, although, those have been going a bit more senior recently. Monthly credit varies, but about a 1000 hours of credit a year is a fair estimate, I think.

Depending on traffic, CAN could be a 4+ hour ride. Does make for a longer day. My GT home was 3:55 a couple days ago. Bad traffic and wx, luckily the border didn't have a huge line. Basically, no matter how you are scheduled to travel up there or back, (i.e. Train, Plane, Ground Transportation) it takes about 4-4.5 hours from the time you leave your home to get to the hotel in CAN and vise versa. You're not doing this right before or after a leg of flying though. You have a rest period usually scheduled in between the live leg and the DH. Some exceptions for reserve callouts and personal deviations though.

Yes need visas to work and live in HK. China too, but company does this for you.

It can be complex, but thanks to the many that have preceded us out here, there is a lot of gouge.
I don't believe the company has any problems filling slots out here currently. (On the FO side that is. Seems there enough CA bidding it when it's open too).

Jumpseating is available on CASS carriers, not too much jumpseating going on intra-Asia except on company aircraft. We do have ID90 tickets too. Don't know enough about them to say if First/Business is an option. Have used them in a long time. Buying positive space tickets works too. Hong Kong isn't far, but the US is way over there though.

Thanks again.
HK isn't for everybody. When the time comes and If you are really interested in coming here, I suggest that you take a trip and look for yourself. I really enjoy being here. It's been a blast
