Default PTS/ACS Add-on Tasks

Hey everyone quick question that I am unable to find a definitive answer to...

I recently completed my ASEL Private add-on coming from rotorcraft and my instructor and I were a bit shocked after the checkride due to the tasks which the DPE evaluated me on. In the ACS, we had prepared for the required tasks in the Add-on table but I ended up being grilled on most of the ground tasks anyway....

Is the examiner within the right to go over ANY task and can it result in an unsatisfactory performance even if its not a required task?

(From here on out I will know all tasks prior to checkride as I think only knowing the minimums will end up hurting yourself in the long run. However, I also thought the the point of an add-on rating was to only evaluate the new tasks rather than take the complete checkride again for the certificate/rating you already hold..)

From the private pilot ACS (page A-12)

For an applicant who holds at least a private pilot certificate and seeks an additional airplane category and/or class rating at the private pilot level, the examiner shall evaluate that applicant in the Areas of Operation and Tasks listed in the Additional Rating Task Table. Please note, however, that the evaluator has the discretion to evaluate the applicant’s competence in the remaining Areas of Operation and Tasks.

Like Xdashdriver pointed out, it is within his right to evaluate the applicant on any area listed within the ACS (as was the case in the PTS). I, too, am a commercial-instrument + instructor helicopter guy that got his commercial ASEL, AMEL, airplane instrument, and CFI/CFII/MEI all as add-ons. My checkrides have varied wildly as to what was covered in regards to what is listed out in the PTS/ACS.

My main advice to anyone adding a category or class to their certificate is to treat the checkride like an initial certification. The task table should be emphasized, but the wildcard tasks or academic questions can and more than likely will come up.

Xdashdriver and Voski I appreciate the reply and advice!

Not sure how I was able to miss the answer like that in the ACS..... Will have to start getting into the ACS and PTS a bit more to avoid this in the future....

Thanks again!
