Default Low Cost Multi

Hi All,

I'm a 1600hr pilot (COM, ASEL) that is considering switching careers to the airlines. As far as I can tell, I have all the ratings and time that I need to get into the regionals except for Multi.

Most of the flight schools around my area are asking $400-$600/hr for a twin. This seems pretty high to me. Can someone point me towards a more reasonable option? I was expecting $200-$250/hr, but maybe my expectations are not realistic.

Location: I'm in NC, but will travel to an alternate location if the costs make since.

Goal: I need my multi endorsement as well as 25-50hrs of multi time. If possible, I would prefer to do most of this solo after becoming proficient in the twin. It seems that may not be possible due to insurance requirements though.

Timeline: Now. I want to get this knocked out ASAP. My time is extremely flexible.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Greg

Great Lakes Air Ventures out of Mason, MI is one of the cheapest that I have seen. You can get your multi add-on there and then they rent out their Twin Comanche for $230/wet.

I'm in the same boat as you, after asking around at the shop, best I've found is Rocky Mountain Airport. Seminole at $189/hr wet, and I think the CFI price is reasonable.

There is a Piper Apache in Florida for $209 an hour.

Aircraft Rental

Here is another Piper Apache in Florida for $210 an hour.

At TO max gross weight the single engine ceiling of the Seminole is well below the airport elevation at Rocky Mountain Airport.

The Apaches in Florida will probably be able to maintain flight on one engine due to the low altitude of the Florida airports, but they will still be 60 year old airframes.

The Twin Comanche is about ten years newer, and a more challenging aircraft to fly well. With a 6,600' single engine ceiling, it has the best performance. Get GOOD training, not minimum checkout with an experienced Twin Comanche instructor.

Add $44/hr for multi instructor. Rocky Mountain Flight School is great. Arrange a DPE prior to staring your training. I had to wait almost 2 months for a DPE. PM me for local Denver DPE's that are great if you are not local.
