Finishing my B.S online?
#11
I did my bachelors online, while working as a loadmaster in the military...and it worked just fine getting me into the top veterinary school. I didn't have time to go to school on campus between training, and traveling. Before you get an online degree however, check the school out real well. Like everyone mentioned, try to do it through a state school. i.e. University of Maryland. Avoid those all online program schools. If you can take a handful of classes on campus, do so. The social interaction is good...but it's not the only way.
You mentioned you didn't want to take the tests and such at school. Most online degrees allow you to do the coursework and such at home, but the tests must be performed at either a location college, or sometimes they allow someone at the library to proctor your tests for you.
If you do it online, have a very good reason for why you didn't complete it on campus. For those of us enlisted, it works out very well. For family men/women, who work full time and come home to kids and a spouse, it works very well also. My mother was a working mom, earned both her bachelors and masters degrees from the U of MD online, and now works for the FAA. It got me into the best vet school. I don't personally believe online degrees are bad, but it's important to make a smart decision as to where to go...and why.

There is a huge difference between someone who did their degree in the military compared to an 18 year old who used college money to pay for ratings because he was too impatient to go to college before getting an airline job and then got the degree while on the line at Mesa. The expectations of someone with military service exceed that of someone with a B.S. Degree from State U.

Well I was very much a guardsman, and could have went to a State U if I wanted to. I didn't want to be part of the whole campus deal. I was married at 18, and wanted to work rather then go to school and make that my life 24/7. It worked well. I don't believe the military had anything to do with where I am today. I've consistently been asked why I choose online v. on campus, and I had a well thought out respond ready...none which included the military. That includes vet schools, which almost always choose from on campus students...co-ops, internships with sea world, and a job as a marine mammal trainer. Marine mammal training is the marine life equivalent to flying for UPS...many people want it, but it's very hard to come by.
Online degrees aren't always bad if you choose the right place for the right reasons. It worked for me, and many other people I know.

I'm in the Army Reserves and am facing a deployment. I don't want to go spend a year in the sand box and have nothing accomplished when I return. I'll keep thinking about it. Appreciate all the feedback.

Well, in your situation, an online degree is very understandable. I think myself and others thought you were the 18-22 year old wonderkid, just looking for the easiest and quickest way possible. I apologize. I believe Jenn would be the person to talk to in regards to this. And thank you for your service to our country!
