I was told today that under part 141 unless you have 500 hours TT that you cannot teach instrument and commercial training. Now under part 61 you can. Has anyone else heard this?

This is news to me. I teach at one, and we have people teaching with under 500TT.

 

Thanks Cubdriver, I have never heard of that either-I figure I would ask you guys with more expericence to see if there is any truth to it. It may be a school policy and not a regulation. I will find out and let you know!

 

There are a variety of experience requirements for 141 chief and assistant chief instructors, but none for line instructors.

 

Bogus. I got a job as a 141 instructor after I got my CFI. No FAR requiring time to exercise your certificate. It might be a local school thing, but don't let them sell you the FAR bull.

 

As far as requirements to teach any student at a 141 school, you basically just have to have cfi ticket and a standardization ride for each course of training you instruct under. Thereafter, you have to have a standardization ride every 12 months. No flight time requirements.

Sounds to me like their confusing the 141 eligibility requirements for an assistant chief instructor:

For a Private pilot approved course - 500 hrs PIC and flight experience as a CFI for 1 yr and 250 flight hours, or 500 flight hours.

For an Instrument approved course - 50 hrs under actual or simulated instrument, 500 hrs PIC, and CFI experience of at least 1 year and 125 flight hours, or 200 flight hours.

For anything other than private or instrument - 1000 hrs PIC, CFI experience for 1 1/2 yrs and 500 flight hours, or 750 hours.

This is all straight out of part 141.

Also, in order for any cfi to teach a cfi initial student as a part 141 instructor you must have 400 hours of dual given in addition to five sign offs and an 80% pass rate.

 

I'm hired at ERAU with 300TT and will be teaching everything in the single-engine until I get my MEI.

EDIT - ERAU Prescott, which is now Part 141 again.

 

Actually, you'll find that you must have either 24 months and 200 dual-given, or 400 dual-given. In both cases the 80% success rate is required.

 

It's my understanding per FAR 61.195 that the 80% pass rate is only required if you're using the 400 dual given taught in an approved course method. If you're using the 24 calendar months and 200 dual given, you do not need the pass rate.

 

Actually.... 141 schools are held to the rules that the VA dictates to that school on a "school to school" basis. VA may have placed that restriction on your school.
