ATP vs. American Flyers
#12
As far as the internship program at flyers. I've known 2 people who have done the internship. The gist of it is this: They pay you $1800/mo salary, and then give you $1800/mo which you use for flight training. You don't pay a dime for the flying, but you pay for it in that you're POOR for more than a year (not much different from first year FO pay). There is no vacation time or health benefits. To get the commercial and instrument with single-engine land ratings takes a year. Average flight time per month is about 15-20hrs/mo since you have to train on your days off, and only get $1800/mo to fly. If you want the CFI and CFII, you have to extend your internship for an additional 4 months.
Any multi-engine time is out of pocket.

I know three people who did the AF intern program back in the mid- to late 1990s. One went to TSA and is at AA by way of USAirways (a westie!). Another went to Comair after I did. The third was flying freight the last I heard. I don't know which carrier he went too.
