Default IFR Recency of Experience

Ok so I recently received my IFR rating. Now I've had it for several months so naturally, I began thinking about my 6 approaches/tracking courses/holding procedures.

Is my thinking correct.........

Just because I received the rating on date x, does not mean i have six months from date x to act as PIC, correct? It depends on when and what experience I logged in my IFR training....right?

Thanks

A checkride for an IR starts your clock...you have six months from the checkride date (to the end of the sixth month).

After that first six months, you have to look back and see 6 approaches, holding, intercepting/tracking. Your currency would then be six months (to the end of the month) from the date of the oldest approach (or it could be the hold).

Same thing if you got an IPC. Even if you only do say 3-4 approaches on the IPC, once signed off you have 6 months from that date. Enjoy

Ok, just curious. Where can I find that in the FAR's? I believe you, but only am reading the recency of experience literature that states "cant act as PIC of flight IFR unless within the last preceding 6 months........" Where can I find the literature that states the rating itself starts the clock?

Thanks again

It's not exactly spelled out, but read 61.57 where it talks about Instrument Proficiency Checks.

The tasks required on an IPC are listed in the Instrument Rating PTS...and those tasks are a subset of the Instrument Checkride tasks. So if you took the checkride, you also took an IPC. If in doubt, compare the tasks in the PTS.
