in this economy, save, save, save. As a CWU and WSU grad. Give the FBO a shot and work at the same time. I am also former QX and if you knew who I was you would see my name on the CWU wall of direct hires (sorry I was not, I was in before the direct hire program began). Get a Degree try Big Bend (Savings) and then transfer to CWU, WWU, UW, WSU, or EWU and get your degree in anything but aviation. In GEG try UND's branch campus, but save your money. I am still paying on student loans 12 years after the fact with no job! Good luck in your endevors.

I'm not sure where in Washington you are but you might consider going to a community college near where you are while also getting your ratings at a an FBO with a good flight training department. After you get your AA transfer to WSU, as the University of Washington blows. Apologies to my husky friends

P.S. GO COUGS!!!

Andy. I'm surprised Ron hasn't fired him.

For the OP, I LOVED my time at CWU. Could I do it again, I would have done the mom and pop thing and got a business degree.

The CWU program is run by two entities. The university handles the academics, Midstate Aviation (FBO) handles the flight training. As a grad of the CWU program, I feel my experience is on par with the vast majority of CWU grads.

I was never really that impressed with Midstate, at all. In fact, I advise everyone I know to steer clear of Midstate Aviation. I was a successful grad of the program, so I'm not jaded that I don't have a job, etc etc. I just cannot fathom how such a poorly run organization can land such a great contract with CWU.

The flight training provided by Midstate is no better than anywhere else, as previously stated. In fact, I will go out on a limb and say that some of the training provided was actually sub-par. For all the professionalism that is preached, I didn't see much, especially after this gear up incident with the chief CFI, on their ONLY multiengine plane. There is a LOT of holier-than-thou attitude, which is funny considering their reputation, and this most recent gear-up landing.

The academic side of the flight program at CWU is amazing, I was very impressed. The CWU staff are great, and really care. The Midstate Aviation side of the program is what drags everything down. When I was at CWU, I felt the staff really cared, and I really got a good value for my money. When the academics were over and I drove down the street to fly at Midstate, I felt the exact opposite. I NEVER felt that the money I spent at Midstate was worth it. From scheduling, to basic things like the front desk staff, I never felt welcome.

To recap, I was thrilled with the academic side of things. The Flight Technology faculty and staff are amazing (Wilson, Sloan, Hoover, adjuncts). The contracted FBO that provides flight training, is very lackluster.

I got my private at Pearson Air in KOLM for a total cost of $3350, the price for private at Midstate....$7000, and thats if you flying the minimum req. If it takes you more than 35 hrs, start adding...

I transfered to Cwu, with my private and did 4.5 years, got my instrument/Comm single, and a b/s in aviation. started my cfi, then quit and did it in kykm for 1/2 the price. Total I spent about $20k at midstate.

I refused to do my comm/multi@ midstate, because they were charging $325/hr for the now defunct pa-44, oh and they had a 20hr minimum for the course.

As agreed with everybody above, CWU itself is a great school. (sloan/hoover/wilson/garcia) are what make the program, classes are fun and you can learn a lot. Mountain flying class? by far the coolest...
But Midstate is a back-breaker on money, and moral. + on a plus note, I do miss the maintenance (Bald Ed), right now I fly planes that are about to fall apart.
My advice, if you want to go to CWU...Transfer with your pvt/inst...do two years at big bend/green river/pierce i think has a program, and finish the last two at CWU, make some good friends, and then enter the real world, to figure out you are #254 in the hiring pool, and you can instruct for years making $15/hr, and remember those student loans are going to have to get paid back... so actually my advice is don't enter aviation...

When 336PA spun a bearing a couple of years ago a handful of students did their multi at Auburn in their Seminole.
