Default Comm rotorcraft to single engine

The other day some army helicopter guys came into the flight school and were asking what it would take to get their fixed wing. They already have commercial helicopter. I was wondering if this would be an add on rating for a commercial or private cert. Also what the hour requirements would be? Any advice would be helpful.

Hey. I trained comm helicopter pilots into their private asel. I was working at a Part 141 school. All I know is that it is an addon rating and that you don't need to meet the 40 hour minimums. Refer to the FARs for Private addon with Rotorcraft Rating.

It's all in 61.109. For a SEL PVT they have to have 3 hours X-C training in a SEL airplane, 3 hours night training in a SEL airplane, 3 hours hood time in a SEL airplane, and 3 hours training in the preceding 2 months in a SEL airplane. They also have to have the 10 hours solo (61.109 (a)(5)) in an SEL airplane.

How you roll the night X-C hood time together is up to you. They've already got 40 hours flight time and 20 hours dual.

Twin Wasp is absolutely correct..Just finished up a commercial army rotorcraft pilot adding a ASEL rating. Not a whole lot to it!

The PTS has a table for required maneuvers from one category to another.

I get the question a lot from fellow Army guys who want to get the commercial-add on to the Comm-Rotor. There seems to be some confusion, and I am glad Wasp brought it up about what is required. Anything that is category specific is all that is required (i.e. in a SEL / MEL airplane). If one gets a like person, my suggestion, in order for it to be cheaper on them would be to get the PPL-ASEL first, build the specific category time solo, then come back and train for the commercial when they are within about 10 hours of the minimum requirements. This has seemed to work well in the past.

Just my cent-and-half...
