American Flyers
I was just curious if anyone has worked at american flyers as a cfi? What was your experience like working there? How was the pay/hours. What was the interview like? Thanks in advance.

I worked there off and on at SEVERAL locations for the last decade - mostly in management but also as an instructor. Honestly, American Flyers is usually a great place to instruct. I'm not sure what their pay scae is now, but I think they are usually better that most other schools. They try to structure your schedule, so it is usually much more efficient than the way other schools do the schedule. So - even if your hourly rate IS lower than some other schools, you will often score better. I left a year ago. If you have more questions, feel free to PM me. Good luck!

We've got an American Flyers at the field with us...they appear to run an older fleet, but I haven't flown with them so I can't say that for a fact. I do like that on days when the weather is low they're blasting off with students...nice to see someone's not scared of a little actual.

I used to work at the SMO location. I hated it. The people I worled with were nice enough though. You never know your schedule untill the night before, so you can never plan anything in advance. The pay leaves a lot to be desired, and you almost never fly with the same student more than three times. I personally thought that if they were charging as much as they were for an hour of fllight, selling gas and running an FBO they could afford to pay their staff much much more. The people I worled with were nice though.

Each AF location is different. It all depends on the CP and office manager at the location you are looking at. Go and introduce yourself. Look around, are there instructors just hanging around? Talk to them and see how busy they are. I enjoyed it and I flew a ton when I was there, but YMMV. And unfortuantly the ties are manditory.

The first year I was there, I think I was making 18/hr and flying about 40-50 hrs/month. Needless to say I had a second job. Then, I was put on salary the next year, and things were better. It was 30k a year, and I was flying twice as much. I have heard of many worse cfi gigs.
Most of the negatives with it have been mentioned already. However, one of the biggest problems for me, was the fact that they had no multi-engine aircraft (some locations DO have them), making it harder to move on afterwards.
