Instrument/Commercial in San Jose, CA
Hello,
I will be in the San Jose area for the next 6 months on a job assignment and was looking for a recommendation of a good flight school to obtain my instrument rating and possibly start the commercial.
I am looking for a school/instructor that doesn't mind flying in actual IMC and I would prefer to fly either Cherokee's or later model 172's (R/S/SP).
So far my internet research has led me to:
AeroDynamic Aviation @ RHV (only older model 172s)
Trade Winds @ RHV (they seem pricey?)
I've never joined a club, but these two seem to have good prices and aircraft:
Squadron2 @ RHV
Oakland Flyers @ OAK
Any thoughts or experiences you could share are much appreciated. I'm not used to having such a choice in flight schools!
Thanks,
shortfinal

Oakland Flyers is a good outfit and I have also heard good things about Aclan Pro Air (HWD) and the West Valley Flying club (PAO, SQL, HWD).
The only two that I would for sure avoid would be Flying Vikings (HWD) and Bel-Air (SQL). Sierra Academy (LVK) has had it's ups and downs but I am sure it's fine now.

Have flown with both Tradewinds and Aerodynamics (formerly known as Amelia's). They are both very good, but very different.
Tradewinds is a slick, modern operator with lots of fancy new airplanes and support facilities.
Aerodynamics is an old fashioned, mom & pops type flying school with heaps of history, charm and character (The airport was founded by and named after the former owner's family) http://www.aerodynamicaviation.com/a...melia_reid.php
I like them both and would not hesitate to recommend either.

Tradewinds is more for the "rich airplane owner" crowd.
Flown at Oakland Flyers, they are not bad but planes are older. Also it's quite a hike- both from San Jose to Oakland, and from the Oakland Flyers building to the planes themselves.
WVFC is pricey but has a good selection of planes.
As far as flying in IMC goes, that's really up to each individual instructor, so I'd ask that up front.
Hope this helps!
