Hi guys, I am seeking for information & advice.

I am now considering to try Airbus type rating in US, based on foreign country license.
My license is CPL/multi with Instrument rating.(ICAO country)

I don't have Airbus experience but I have some type rating on my CPL.
I think I meet US ATP requirement.

#1 Can I join US Airbus type rating course directly based on my license?
OR
Should I get US ATP(multi) before joining US type rating course?

There are requirement when we use SIM for type training.
At (g)-(3)-(ii), there are requirement for flight experience...
Does "Hold type rating" include "foreign type rating"?

I am happy if you could give me good advice.

U.S. Type ratings are performed to ATP standards. If you had the FAA ATP written completed, you could probably have an FAA ATP added to your license coincident to the type rating ride...and the Airbus type would be on your ATP, not a CPL.

All the FAA will give you based on a foreign license is a private certificate. However, since you hold an ICAO commercial license, you can get a stand alone FAA ATP by passing the knowledge test and the checkride. Many people get their ATP as part of a type rating checkride.

61.157(g) talks about VFR only type ratings, I'm not sure what you are asking.

I took a FAA ATP(single engine rating) license last year, so I passed ATP written test.
I understood I can join directly Airbus type training course. Thank you!!

As concerns Part61.157(g)(3)(ii), there were explanation about “Use of a flight simulator or flight training device for an airplane rating”, until 2010. I’m sorry, now this subject is deleted form Part61.157.
Probably, this subject is moved to Part61.64 “Use of a flight simulator and flight training device.”

Part61.63 is talking about “Type rating other than ATP certificate” so…
I think “ATP type rating requirement” are 3 subjects when we train by Level C/D simulator.

*Part61.159 Aeronautical experience: Airplane category rating.
*Part61.64 Use of a flight simulator and flight training device.

I have 2000+ flight hours, and 500++ flight hours on 1 business jet & 2 turbo-prop type rating, so I think I meet Part61.41(a)(2)(v).
But…just I would like to know “Hold type rating” means in detail…

so here is what i understand:

you hold a U.S. single engine land ATP
you hold foreign pilot licenses
you plan on completing an Airbus type rating course

if you complete your airbus training at a FAR Part 142 training center, either inside or outside the U.S., and bring your ATP certificate and submit an 8710-1 form, you will leave with a Single and Multiengine Land ATP with an Airbus type rating.

couple of points: it has to be an approved 142 training center. flight safety and CAE and others have these both inside and outside the U.S. if you complete your training and XYZ airline, and it is not an approved 142 center, you cannot have the 8710 form completed, and thus ineligible for the MEL ATP and Airbus type. if you take your type ride at a 142 school, and do not have them sign off on the 8710, your type rating would be for your foreign licenses only. you cannot get retro credit for a type rating. the exception is getting them on a U.S. private based on a foreign. and since you have a U.S. ATP, you are not eligible for this certificate.

whew, there is the disclaimer. check the box if you agree to these terms.

if the center also does type rides for other ICAO licenses, you can get the type on your ICAO license and U.S. ATP certificate. check with the center you plan on doing to training with, and see what they need and want. but the key is it MUST be an FAA part 142 training center, and an 8710-1 form must be completed on the day of the checkride in order for you to get MEL and the airbus type added to your U.S. ATP.

Yes, the FAA moves the regs around every few years - keeps instructors learning.

If you hold a FAA ATP SEL then you do not have to take another written. The Airbus checkride will also serve as a ATP MEL checkride.

There is an "or" at the end of 61.64(2)(iv) so you can read "or" at the end of (i),(ii),(iii) and (iv). So if you meet the requirements of one of those paragraphs, you can train in a sim.

There are places in the regs that say "issued under this part" when the FAA is requiring something done under US rules. Since 61.64(2)(i) just says "type rating" and not "type rating issued under this part" I would think a JAA type rating is OK. The idea is that while people say the sim flys like the airplane, there are things that are not realistic in the sim. The FAA wants you to have some real world experience in turbojets before you complete a type rating in a sim.

Since you are not working for an airline, you would complete your Airbus training at a Part 142 school. Part 142 covers type ratings in sims. The 142 schools in the US have many foreign students and can answer your questions about FAA and TSA requirements.

You should talk with some of the 142 schools to see if they have any other requirements. You can compare costs and schedules.
