Yeah...50K worth of student loans at a good interest rate is worth it. Of course, the individual has to know going into aviation he won't be making 50K for a few years...But it can be managed...

With The college degree and military expierience would I be one of the most likely caniditates to be hired?
Would the $200k + in debt be worth it?
What would my starting pay be?
About how much should i be expecting to make in 5 years?
Any of you know If air traffic controllers realistically see 6 figures?
I read a lot of articals saying the average pilot makes about $130k per year, but from the talk on this boared it seems like a lot less.
Go military. Get a slot flying heavy transport aircraft, not fighters.

I have friends who have been in aviation for 20 years and are just now starting to make the salaries that you mention.

Here is a word of advice-- I learned a long time ago that it is a LOT better to be the person who sits in the back of the business jet than the one who sits in front.

$1,000 a year for books is not a bad estimate. I have paid $300 in a year for books, and I have payed $1050 in a year for books.
Even if you think that number is high, it does not affect the overall picture of $27k a year for tuition, $7k a year for room and board, $10k a year for flying. WAY TOO MUCH MONEY!!!

BTW, I have a degree in Aerospace Engineering but I chose flying instead. I had friends who made $65k a year out of college. I don't care that I will probably make more money as an engineer than as a pilot. I have no desire to sit at a computer and do math for the rest of my life. I would much rather be flying a plane, even if that maxes out at SENIOR regional captain/ legacy FO pay (80-100k). So make your choice for what you want to do in your life. Don't worry so much about the pay. Thats what I recommend.

I easily spent that... undergrad and medical school. Books and supplies. Books being the most $$$ of it

Now it's 10 yrs with the AF, USN, USMC, and the Coasties.

Ok, you dont do the military thing and become a regional pilot. You still have the $120,000 in debt and now you are making a whopping $23,000 a year
($23/hr x 80 hr/mnth + maybe some per diem). Pay taxes, repay your loan, etc, etc. Hope you like pbj's......
Or... find a wife with a good job.

Even with the purchase of 727 manuals and a King Air POH, I never made it near $1K/year for books. Guess I was lucky.
