Default Best flight tracking website?

If I wanted to track a VFR flight of my son flying a Cessna 172 what is the best website to use?

The best all-round flight tracking site is FlightAware - Flight Tracker / Flight Status / Flight Tracking . You may be able to see his flight on the website if he is getting flight following from ATC. Otherwise it may be more unlikely to follow if he is just squawking 1200

It only works if he's on an IFR flight plan AFAIK.

Default Further on down the road

As stated above, IFR for sure, maybe if on VFR fright following.

I use Flight Explorer Pilot Edition. Again, IFR only, thus the "further down the road". It's $15/mo and will track any or all a/c in the system world wide. They have a free version as well.

It's quite versatile - track a tail # (or commercial flight) with emails, flight plan updates, etc. You can filter on just about anything. There are tons of overlays (tracon, airways, cities, wx, SUA, sector, center, etc). The "World View" is quite impressive.

Here's a rather complicated screen shot. Hover over an a/c and see ATC's tag (flight, alt, speed, origin, destination)

Is this what a lot of smaller company dispatchers use? I think it is.

Could be. There is a "Professional" version that they might use. There is also a lower end version, and the free one.

Flight explorer is used by many companies. They have a larger more capable system designed with professional dispatch systems in mind.

If he's going to be flying VFR a lot and you want to be able to keep real time dibs on his location, you iChat consider getting him one of these:
SPOT Satellite GPS Messenger

Real time location, updated every 10 minutes.

The unit is $100 and the service subscription is $99/year. But it's going to be for sure info for any activity he flies (as long as he turns it on) and also can summon help to his location if he needs it.

Can you track tail numbers that are blocked?

Nope. The ATC tag just shows Blocked when in flight.
