it's like I want everyone to know i'm a pilot, but when you get a few hundred hours its not a big deal anymore. I've known pilots that hate their job and all the crap that goes with it, and wish they chose a different profession.
You'll find that in every field. We just do a better job of whining about it than most.

I believe it just depends on the person.. Things are going to look stupid to different people. However, if I had a professional pilot uniform with me as I go through ATP flight school the next few months I wouldn't wear it. I want to wait to put that on as a Professional pilot.. I know every professional pilot pretty much looks forward to that even though I'm sure later it obviously is just that.. A uniform

No, that looks silly.

What looks stupid is using their instead of they're.

20 year olds spend all their time worrying about what other people think of them....takes another 20 years to realize that other folks didn't have time to think about them because they were too busy worrying about themselves.

I'm all for making students dress professionally and having some pride in what they're doing but it just looks goofy. Hell I'm tired of wearing MY uniform already! Only time it got me some play was in places where pilots are seen as more than drivers anyway
So let's see; 3 bars for commercial, 4 bars for CFI and a Beanie Copter hat for ATP's with gold cuff links and silver wings AND Aiguillettes worn smartly on the right shoulder and henceforth, referred to as "His air-worthiness"

I'm pretty sure TSA requires foreign students who are flight training to wear the uniform which explains why most schools with INTL students have that policy.

Apparently that might not be such a bad idea. It was recently reported we have lost track of about 8000 foreign students. I vote to have them wear GPS ankle bracelets.

The uniform is just a costume accessory that makes the average pax feel that their crew is "more professional". It is necessary to wear it properly.

But if you don't have any pax....

I feel bad for students and CFI's that are forced to wear them by butt-clown flight schools. I've never heard of a TSA requirement for that. Some flight schools have a custom biz-casual style uniform, which is more reasonable but of course is mandatory and can only be purchased from the flight school...

I don't think too highly at all of non-pro pilots who wear a pilot uniform voluntarily, and that includes free-lance CFI's.

If you want a uniform you can be proud of, join the military or the fire dept.

I sort of agree, its like trying to be something you're not, too me those bars are earned through hard work, scraping every dollar for flight hours together, driving crappy cars or going without a car,and made it those pilots have my respect and have earned the right to wear the uniform, its almost like wearing a military uniform and never have served, ok Halloween is the exception, but it looks dumb and I would never sign up for a flight school that had me wear a uniform, how lame.
