Thanks Olympic, that's what I remember. Can any of you share advice on how you got through the JAA exams? Anything you discovered that made the process easier? etc. How many times did some of you have to retake the exams?

I know many of my friends just use the online question databases to get through them (same as gleim, with the FAA, just 10 000 questions instead or so).

I'm using it as well to supplement with my reading/studying

Besides studying hours a day, I used Bristol ground schools database atplonline.gs to practice questions. It's the GLEIM of Europe but with a database of over 10,000 questions so memorizing is not an option(although I know others who did memorize the questions, how they did that is beyond me). But just to let you know, most of the questions on the database are on the JAA exams, expect 3-4 new questions on each exam the most, so I highly recommend buying the Bristol database. I passed all 14 exams the first time.

I second what Olympic just said. I used the Bristol GS database and passed them all first time (apart from one - missed it by 1% - passed it 2nd time). I did attempt the exams about 10 years ago and failed MISERABLY! There was no 'database' as such back then, but more UK CAA feedback 'type' questions.

But the second time around (about 6 months back) I find my experience from two type ratings and flying experience definitely helped me.

I used to be a JAA Flight Instructor (endorsed on the basis of my FAA CFI/II/MEI) and I saw people who had no business being in a cockpit pass those exams. That's what motivated me to do them again. They CAN be done and CAN be passed. But do not approach the study material the same way people do the FAA system.

Had to add this, but my advice.... There's no need to do 10 exams in one sitting. No need for it. Do 4 exams MAXIMUM in each sitting - but make sure you've mastered the 4 before you go for the exam. Marathon not a Sprint comes to mind.

Don't know how it is in other countries, but I would definately recommend doing all 14 in one period.
Not sure if this is a Norway CAA thing, but if you split them, you can't take the ones you failed in the first period in the second.

So say we have 5 exam periods during the year, you do 7 of them in November, and 7 of them in February. That means, if you failed 1 in the first 7, you would have to take that single one in a 3rd exam period in say May.

About 90% of the students I know of are taking all 14 in one go, and about 50%+ pass all of them on the first try, the rest pass the ones they failed on the 2nd period. Making this way of doing it a 2-period max, unless you really **** something up

Perhaps this is a Norwegian CAA testing method.

I also did the JAA exams 6 years ago, taking 4 exams at each sitting. I completed them in about 6 months.

Olympic, how are things? long-time no see/hear.

Hey thanks guys for the replies, I will use that website to practice, very useful. I'm currently using Oxford to do all my basic reading, I really like the detail within the JAA, I can't stress that enough.

As Olympic stated, you need not surrender your FAA Certificate after you get your JAR Certificate. However there are some agencies within Europe that may not allow one to maintain two active certificates at the same time. You need to check with each country as to what they require and allow as to how many certificates you are able to maintain. Also an airline may require one to obtain a certificate in that specific country. Written nor medical exams are generally required. But a fat bank account is.

To be honest, a LOT of the stuff you learn in the 14 subjects is quite retarded. Some are good, some is a bit too much, some is just far out, about 1/3 each

Lifter all is well, just got back from a nice 2 week vacation in the Greek Islands

Regarding work, still waiting for this Aegean/Olympic merger to go through to see what the future holds.

How about you?
